As a kid Collins Mix was everywhere and then disappeared for a time and now it seems to be making a comeback?

Growing up in the 60’s the adults were very sociable when it came to impromptu cocktail parties… and beer/wine wasn’t really on the menu… I remember lots of laughing and as they say chewing the fat…

Times have changed… no more Canada Dry Collins Mix.

The best Collins mix I have found is Master of Mixes which has sugar in it instead of high fructose corn syrup and makes a great Tom Collins.

Juniper berries are the primary flavor element in gin.

We love the flavor of juniper berries in gin but the most expensive gins have very little juniper berry taste. Our favorite gin is the least expensive Taaka gin which was originally made in New Orleans but is now made in Kentucky where most liquors are now made. It has the best juniper berry taste and is great in a Tom Collins.
The best Gin and Tonic I ever has was in Ireland where when you ordered one they gave you a glass of ice, a miniature bottle of their local gin and a small bottle of local tonic water so you could pour your own. No flat tonic water from sitting on the bar all day.

I make a pretty mean Bloody Mary:
Vodka
Ice
V8
Lemon Juice
Franks Red Hot Sauce
Tabasco Sauce
Worchestershire Sauce
Salt (or celery salt) and Pepper to taste
Celery stick if desired

My favorite bar adds to the Bloody Mary, 6 olives, a pickled okra, a slice of fresh fried bacon and a slice of lime. No need to order dinner with it.

I kinda doubt that anyone actually orders these as I suspect they are just for show, but their regular bloodys are awesome and they add a couple chunks of cheese, a small beef stick and pickle and olives to that, on a stick. And that is quite enough!

Funny that you mentioned this about Ireland.

Our first trip to Ireland was by boat. After arriving at our final port before flying home, we took the boat's owner to dinner. He wanted a Gin and Tonic but he was afraid the tonic would have high fructose corn syrup(HFCS). We had a long conversation about tonic water and HFCS. I think the waiter thought we were nuts.

Our friend eventually ordered the G&T, and as happened to you, the waiter brought the gin and tonic water, each in their own bottle. We thought he did that because of our HFCS conversation.

The first thing we did was look at the ingredient list for the Schweppes tonic water. The tonic water was bottled in Scotland and had NO HFCS.

During my first trip to the grocery store back at home, I picked up a bottle of Schweppes tonic water and read the ingredients. Yep, HFCS.

During our second Ireland trip, we stayed at a wee, small town in a rural area. The pub was right next to the AirBnB. To be fair there were six or so pubs and bars in this wee, small town so one did not have to walk far to get a drink.

One night at the pub, we started talking with a couple sitting next to us. Many a long story about that couple but to stay on topic, the man was drinking G&Ts. Every G&T order had it's own bottle of gin and Schweppes tonic water. Soooo, the waiter did NOT bring us the Schweppes tonic water bottle because of our HFCS conversation on our first visit.

I usually just don't buy junk with HFCS in it. The greedy bass turds who make that carp can insert it into their donkey as far as I'm concerned.

This seems to be standard across most soda brands. USA Coca Cola has HFCS, but Mexican Coca Cola has real cane sugar. One treat of going to a Mexican restaurant is that most of them around here will stock bottled Mexican Coca Cola, at least for themselves and friends if not on the menu, and they'll usually serve that if you ask for it.
