Good Morning
63° and 99% RH this morning. High in the middle 80’s with slight chance of rain under partly cloudy skies.
Yesterday went pretty well. I cleaned up in the shop while I waited for the TSA, they arrived right on time. And to my surprise, were very nice. The inspection went well, perfectly might be a better adjective. No issues and not time consuming. Afterwards they wanted to go down and see the alpacas.
Next on the list was the mini split in the shed. Fortunately, the issue was installer error. I pressurized it with 400psi of Nitrogen, and the error was easily found. I heard it with the good old Accutrak ultrasonic leak detector and then verified it with good old bubbles.
As you can see the issue was some sort of inclusion in the copper right at the flare. This was a connection that I did, but I did use the cheap copper line set that came with the unit, but I cut it to size and re-flared it.
After fixing it, I pressurized it with N2 again and let it sit for a couple of hours while I went to take advantage of Whopper Wednesday at the new local Burger King. When I came back, the pressure was 10psi higher than I left it, due to the hot sun baking the condenser. I considered that a pass, there were no more bubbles, and the Accutrak was quiet.
Next step was to pull a vacuum, so while I was waiting for that, went down to son’s and looked at the 15 year old LG mini split in the old smoke house, now my DIL’s photography studio. That one was an easy fix, rodents had chewed through a wire in the outdoor unit.
By the time I got back up to the shed, the vacuum was down to 450 microns, so it was ready to charge. I weighed in 24 ounces of R454b (which is practically unobtainable now) and the unit is humming along making cold air again.
Next chore was the batteries for the UPS’. I bought three 12v 9ah SLA batteries for just over $60 with tax at warehouse battery. They are only a 20 minute drive for me and always have given me great service, and they stand by their batteries as well.
Last thing was an Airport Authority meeting, there was an executive session to deal with some potential legal actions prior to the normal meeting, but other than that it was just normal business.
Today will start with breakfast with the professor, then the rest of the day is up for grabs.
