This starts like all good stories… someone borrowed my tractor. They said it sparked, smoked and stopped running. When I got there it wouldn’t turn over only a starter click. Battery voltage 12.5V. Brief inspection looks like the hot terminal on the starter shorted and melted the rubber covering. I haven’t begun troubleshooting but guesses on whether it’s going to require a starter replacement or something else? Thanks!

Hopefully it will be that simple. I burned up one starter on a ZD mower years ago, but that was me over working it with a fuel problem. Mine smoked on the inside, but I'm sure the 12v lug got pretty hot. Are you certain the operator didn't just crank it for minutes on end?
In any case, you will find out how proud Kubota is of its starters when you price them. I have had good service from cheap Amazon starters in the $70 price range.
Good luck to you.

Yeah thanks. I’m not an OEM purist at all

Is there a vent hole in that starter with some smoke stains around it? It’s probably the camera angle but it almost looks like the starter is sagging down on the left side.

Yes it looks like overheating. Maybe the starter got hung up with the flywheel causing mucho heat and failure. I might take it to the dealer since it’s newish and I don’t have time right now. Meanwhile outside “I am the grass, let me work “—Sandberg

Wonder if they ran it out of diesel and used the starter to get it going without bleeding the air out?

Kubota is very pround of 2 items, starters and seats...lol Having said that' I've never roasted a Denso starter in the last 40 years.

For starters and alternators, I use a local Armature service.

The bonus for me though is that work gets a pretty good discount, so depending on what the starter or alternator is for, I can get a new one for about $10 over the cost to get one rebuilt.

The Kubota BX I owned several years ago was self bleeding. When I added a remote filter I drained the fuel lines several times messing with it and took a little longer to start but not much. Just cycling the key a couple of times without trying to start it is enough.

The OEM Denso starters and alternators are far superior to any Chinese knockoff ones and worth getting rebuilt and are 100% rebuildable.
