Good evening,

I am new to the forum and appreciate any input. I have a 2002 x585 with ~800 hours on it that I got used (for a great price) from a friend who moved. This winter the solenoid to engage the PTO failed and I replaced it. While this is relatively low hours, my friend stored the machine outdoors and used it to spread salt, so I assumed it was the result of corrosion. After the solenoid replacement, the machine worked perfectly.

Now, less than 50 hours of use later, the solenoid seems to have failed again. The mower will not engage. The wiring harness sends 12v to the solenoid, but when I remove the solenoid and put 12v across it, it does not actuate. This is a new JD part that was installed this winter. The PTO engagement switch, RIO switch, and wiring harness seem to test fine.

Has anyone seen this before, and is this the result of some "downstream" problem that I need to address as well? I don't want to replace this solenoid if it is the symptom rather than the cause and have it fail again soon.

Thanks for the help,

Peter

My hood is cracked so I replace the solenoid every year. (mower is 12 years old now), I just view it as part of my yearly maintenance :) It might be that the battery is gone, my battery was showing full charge but would not start the mower last winter zapped it.

No I haven't heard of that but it may have just been faulty from deere. I would get another and see what happens.

Most Auto Parts Sales locations can match the old relay with a new one. May be the cheapest route.

This is a round canister coil style solenoid I would imagine. So I wouldn't think many auto parts stores would be able to match it. I'm not saying there isn't a vehicle that uses them but I haven't seen one on a vehicle.

Have you adjusted the air gap on your clutch? If the air gap gets to large it causes the coils to draw excessive amps which causes them to over heat and fail. There should be three or four spring loaded adjustment points on the clutch assembly. Target air gap is usually around .010" .

Sounds like good advice...
Do you have a service manual?

An x585 has an internal hydraulic clutch. No adjustments for the clutch. The solenoid energizes and allows oil to lock the clutch up.

Does it look like this?

Did you replace item 1, 4 or both?

There is a post where a X595 owner found that a simple relay was the cause.
I always keep a spare engagement switch, as a spare.

Just picked up a X728 that was used to spread salt and snowblow at a bank. When I engage the PTO it will spin the PTO but if I put a mower deck or snowblower on it then it doesn't have the power to spin it. I ordered a new solenoid and will try that when it arrives but was wondering if anyone has had an issue where the solenoid only partially works?

If the PTO will spin it sounds like the solenoid is engaging the PTO shaft.

The X728 also has a internal Hydraulic Clutch.

Will the PTO spin under load? Sounds like it will not, but don't know that from what has been said here.

It won't spin or I should say it doesn't spin either the mower deck or snowblower up to speed, they turn slowly for about 30 seconds then stop completely. I think it may be the clutch pack is worn out as it did have a smell like brakes that have been overheated.

After pulling the PTO solenoid and checking the valves I replaced the solenoid. I also changed the clutch pack and PTO brake as they were worn pretty bad. The old solenoid would let the pin disappear into the shaft fully and I found out that it shouldn't. It should have some spring resistance for the last 1/4" or so. Still have the machine tore down (replacing a front right wheel oil seal and o-ring that was leaking) so I haven't tested it running yet. Thanks for the info folk!
