For some reason I thought this had already been decided.
A few years ago, the MN legislation did pass a law that force auto makers and some other manufactures to make the software available for repair shops, however the bill excluded agriculture equipment.

When I said I thought it was resolved I should have made it more clear. I thought nation wide JD agreed to let people work on them other than dealers. There was also a push for JD to say you own the tractor but we own the software, I think automakers may have tried that too. I may be getting two separate issues mixed up?

So many other makes also require a computer from the dealer to reprogram replacement parts or resetting display after simple scheduled maintenance. It seems Deere is the one being targeted though.

It won't matter. JD will just start using Indvidual modules that require replacements to be coded with an ID. Just like what the vehicles manufacturers started doing. Some/Many vehicles use coded modules for seat belts, lights, AC, radio, dash lights, interior lights, and on and on.

On Thing bad about the tractor industry is no standard like there is with cars and light trucks, mainly the OBDII port and standard error codes.

Lawnmowers are even worse. Every brand that has EFI engines have their own cable and software program for a laptop or wireless dongle to smart phone with app download. Everybody can purchase the cable but the software is only available on the dealer only websites for download. Now there are aftermarket code readers for some of the brands but not all, and each reader is engine brand specific.
