10 dead in New Orleans

Waking up to terrible news this morning. Apparently, a truck plowed through a crowd on Bourbon Street around 3 am this morning.

I live about 2 hours from New Orleans, and I really don't want to visit there anymore. It's a fun, beautiful place to visit, but it is now also very dangerous.

And, with the Sugar Bowl there today, this is really bad for the tourist industry in New Orleans.

I'm sickened by the news I read this am about the attack on Americans as they celebrate the New Year.

I'm sure they will call for more gun control.

The FBI is supposed to make a statement at about 1 PM CST today. I suppose that now there will be calls to ban pick-up trucks.

A simple thing to disable, so you are probably right. Another law that will have little impact for the reason it was shoved down our throat!

Now they are reporting that the attacker was a Texas citizen who is ex US military. The FBI is also reporting that they don’t believe he acted alone.

We need more details before jumping to conclusions. The suspect is supposed to be a US citizen from Texas, so anything about crossing the border is a red herring.

Authorities identified the suspect as Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar (October 26, 1982 – January 1, 2025), a 42-year-old American citizen born and raised in Texas who lived in Pasadena, Texas, at the time of the attack, and was a former resident of Beaumont, Texas.

His motivations are either unknown, or still under investigation.

The "rental" seems a bit odd.

The truck used in the attack that killed at least 10 people in New Orleans on New Year’s Day was listed on the car rental site Turo, the vehicle’s owner told CNN in a text message.

Two federal law enforcement officials also told CNN the truck did not belong to the suspect. One of the sources added it was rented on a site that owners use to rent out their own cars.

The vehicle, a white Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck, is registered to a Houston man who has worked for the car dealership where the vehicle was sold, according to public records based on the vehicle’s license plate. The man told CNN the vehicle was listed on Turo, a website that allows owners to rent out their vehicles to other people.

He did not answer additional questions about the renter or the truck.

One of the man’s listings on Turo is for a truck that matches the one used in the attack, although photos on the Turo page only have a temporary license plate and don’t show the same plate as the one in New Orleans.

Turo did not respond to a request for comment, but the site disabled the truck for renting Wednesday morning. Before it was disabled, the vehicle was listed as costing $105 a day, excluding taxes and fees, and it was unavailable to rent until 12:30 p.m. CST on Wednesday.

The FBI is continuing to investigate the suspect’s potential ties to Texas, one of the officials said.

If the pickup did go to Mexico, it could have been with a different driver.

I have seen trailers and small equipment for rent on Craigslist. However, this might be a warning not to rent personal vehicles out to strangers.

The reports I’ve seen have all been specific in that the boarder license plate reader picked up the plate… nothing about who was in the vehicle only the plate sequence was read.

Plate readers are not 100% because twice in the last 10 years I have been sent toll invoices based on plate but upon further human investigation the vehicle captured was not even close to being my vehicle.
