Grandma's Coffee

My mother told me but I don't remember. Too much information the remember when you are old. The handle not2old came about more than twenty years ago when my ex kept telling me to get rid of my dirt bike because I'm too old. I've gotten a Harley and two more dirt bikes as well as a sled since then.

I’ve also heard of people doing this with boiled coffee, but never knew why.

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing it in older movies as a kid. I've never thought to look it up, but now I have a chance to ask in a conversational setting- I had to. It seems so foreign.

I had to look it up so we could all know; apparently it takes away the bitterness!

I never would have thought this was the reason.

I use a Bunn coffee maker and I grind my own organic beans. Also add a pinch of Celtic salt, a little brown sugar, and sometimes a little vanilla extract, too.
Makes for a nice smooth coffee

You're speaking my language here.... I bounce back and forth between honey and brown sugar with cream in my coffee depending on what we have in the house, but my preference is generally good dark brown sugar.

I probably stumbled on that combo one morning when we were out of regular sugar years ago. I strongly suspect that my affinity for brown sugar in coffee is from it tasting a very little bit like poor man's cafe con leche.....

Went to high school in Tampa, FL and in order to deal Bay Area traffic I'd usually get to school 45min-1hr early. Most mornings 5 or 6 of us would meet in the school park and load up in someones car to head a block over to a mom 'n pop bodega converted from a 2 pump gas station and buy ex-large cafe con leches, a pack of smokes to split and some cuban bread or chorizo and egg sammies to consume back at school in student parking .... Lot of good memories around having breakfast with the guys before school.

Funny part was the diversity of reactions we got from school staff that had to monitor the parking lot in the mornings - it was an all boys Jesuit High School. The priests and brothers generally would let us smoke & drink our coffee in peace before school...whereas some of the lay staff were the ones trying to hand out detentions.

Have two methods:

1 Keurig... when I have no company and need some java fast, almost daily.
2 grind and drip...I have an old style hand operated coffee grinder. Beans are from two places in Africa and my nephew who has his own import/export coffee business. I grind the beans and place them in an old style drip coffee cone filter. Then I gentle pour boiling hot water over the grounds and everything on the counter top.

Method number 2 takes time, but it is probably the best coffee for those seeking flavor and caffeine.

Anyone roast their own beans? I used to, but I’m just grinding organic now.
Roasted coffee beans fill the house with an awesome aroma.

It's been some time, but I recall coffee roasting threads in the past, maybe in "Related Topics" or "Rural Living". Seem to remember some folks used hot air popcorn poppers to roast small batches.
