If only there were a sign, to tell him how high the overpass was.
Maybe, just maybe, the sign is missing from the other side???

Doubt it.

Pretty sure there are "drivers" out there in the wild that you could slap the sign in front of their eyes and they would still miss it somehow
Have you ever ran into a crane hook from a shop crane, hanging just above your eyes so you dont notice because your eyes navigate down in front of you, so you smack your forehead into the crane hook whilst navigating the cluttered shop floor in front of you ? (I always rise them above head, or lower them to below shoulder height when i walk in the shop and see a crane hook at forehead height)

Same with trucking, you need your eyes on the road so its easy to miss something in the sky. For that reason, many low overpasses in the neighbouring city have a beam suspended on chains before the overpass. Hitting that at 40mph makes enough noise to warn drivers ahead so they can take the on-ramp before the overpass.

People who hit bridges arent as dumb as you think they are: they just pay attention to traffic.

We have a few bridges over the Delaware in town.
One that is barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other.
The other is slightly wider but not very tall.

They have all kinds of warnings, overhead signs, Hanging beams etc.
But still huge trucks try to get on them.
Watched one take about 10 minutes to back out after hitting the overhead beam.

When I see a box truck on the smaller bridge I just have to shake my head.
The bridge authority people have traffic lights now on both sides to stop oncoming traffic when that happens.

If they were focusing on the road, they would never try to get across.

I don't about you or those drivers, but to me, part of focusing on the road is also check the surroundings. People or animals on side walks, tree branches, low hanging wires, looking to the mirrors multiple types to see what's going on back there and most importantly, practicing defensive driving, which is something I keep seeing less and less.

I still stand by thinking those people are indeed that dumb. I mean, one is driving a tall truck that you know it can hit stuff, the least one can do it to keep that in the back of your mind and be aware of possible height issues, specially with so many signs in front of the eyes like in this case.

People who pull these stunts are more focused on their phones or the GPS, rather than actual driving.

But to answer your question, I've hit those shop cranes once or twice but I wasn't driving so I wasn't paying that much attention.

Driving, or negotiating a shop in which forklifts drive, grinder sparks can come your way, trip hazards on the floor... you need almost as much attention as when driving on the road 😉

Probably more so since you aren't protected by a metal/glass shell of some sort.

Somebody didn't take the "laws" of inertia into count when chaining that beam to the trailer! I'm sure glad he lives to see another day!

He slammed into the other truck in front of him quite hard also.

At about 1130 last night, wife and I in bed had just turned out the lights, we hear skeeeeeeeeerKADUNK

Fellow was fine, my guess is his BAC was sufficient that he was loose enough during the roll-over not to tear anything.
He kept asking if we would help him roll the car back over but we declined; I'd called 911 and CHP (they have jurisdiction on the "highways" around here) showed up about 15 minutes in and we went back to the house.

Tow truck sure made a lot of noise for a while.

Scraping metal on asphalt is like fingernails on a chalkboard!

I just went out to look at the road and there's no sign of skidding. Just a hint of fluids on the asphalt and some busted plastic on the shoulder.

Good thing he didn't roll it down that steep bank!

We switched from cans to a bulk tank in the late 50's. I can still recall the milk hauler that came and got the cans. He would bend over to reach down in the water bank can cooler grab two cans one in each hand stand up with them rotate them to lay on his back and shoulder walk to the truck and set those two cans on the bed, then repeat several times. All day long
That was my dad!
On school snow days (so I'm guessing it was mid 1960s) I would ride with him. People along his route would wait at the end of their driveway for him to bust through the drifts & follow him.
