My kids will be left little.

Not because there will be little left, but because they will have the life they make. Most of what we have will be donated, they can split the property, which will be quite enough. I'm guessing $400k each

Were 57 and 56.. Been thinking about selling out and retiring. My job is fairly physical and I can't imagine doing it another 10 years. At our age health insurance will be the biggest expense .. $2100.00 per month now and does nothing but go up every year. so over the next 8 years.. Its likely to be north of 3K a year.. That's a significant nut to carry even if everything else is paid for.

Yep… insurance keeps many on the job… at least until 65.

I’m leery of selling and going to cash because of inflation… mighty tempting though.

At our age, Provided we were debt free.. House cars etc.. I think we would need to be 3.5M liquid at a minimum. That's do-able but we would really need to consolidate and downsize quite a bit

Dad had lifetime credential K-12

He briefly taught High School years ago and valued having it...
What subjects? I am certified in all Social Sciences. Mostly taught Econ and Government, but some US History. All HS.

I know he taught Social Science, History and Physical Education…. South Lake Tahoe High School.

He had a too good offer from the clubs in the summer to be body guard for the headliners and was sworn in as a Nevada Special Deputy.

Said it was a great job for a young guy… take care of the Headliner, make sure nothing happens and most important on time and ready for the dinner and cocktail show…

The casino had a private boat on the lake plus a ranch property for the stars…

Dad said some of the Headliners were the nicest people and for others you were just the armed hired help.

Down time it was the bank runs to Carson City over the old Kingsbury grade… sacks of silver dollars still circulating…

Dad said those heavy sacks with lots of Carson City minted dollars would have made a nice nest egg if one had the means to buy a couple for retirement.

After HS graduation, my best friend's family moved to S. Lake Tahoe. He went to UNR and worked at Harrah's Sports Book.

We saw Kevin Cronin hanging out at an arcade (late) with his kid. It was surreal at 19 or 20.

Tahoe was a place entertainers often traveled with family as a sort of working vacation…

My girlfriend won Tony Orlando tickets and we went… it was a good show with lots of audience connection and we were one table over from Robert Goulet who was headlining at the club across the street…

I guess not unusual to catch a show of someone else…

Another show was during a blizzard and no one was going anywhere so the sold out crowd was only a fraction… Smokey Robinson had everyone come down to the front rows and it was almost like a private show…

A lot of retired friends of my parents would always go to Tahoe to catch the shows and if you were a regular it came with perks…all before computers and such…

I met Red Skelton as a kid… he was very approachable and made a drawing for my brother…

My grandmother never missed Lawerence Welk or Jim Neighbors…

Being retired it was her getaway…

Haha, Lawrence Welk. That was a regular for my mom, too.

Myron Floren (the accordian player) was from a town a few miles from where mom grew up.

Myron was always grandma's favorite.

Well, I earned a couple years worth of expenses, since the election 😂

So, retirement looks even better than last week.
A feel good market for sure. I give it a few more months....then no clue as to direction.

Got to dance to Myron Floren at the Wurstfest in New Braunfels back in the late 60's.
Even spoke to him briefly between sets. Really nice fellow!

Moved my son in law's old 401K to an IRA a month or two ago. He bought in below $30. It topped $36 this week. He thinks I'm a genius because he made more in two months than it had made in ten years.

Told him that 'even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then'.

Also told him that it would probably drop to below $30 again sometime in the next year but to not worry about it. That's just how the market functions.

Congratulations!

I retired in 2018 at 55. Then in 2020, I was asked to help out for a couple of months at a local business (Covid caused them to need another person).

I'm still there, working part time for half the year. But I am thinking of quitting again, this time it is going to stick.

WOW! Have you looked at other options, maybe Christian Healthcare Ministries or Philadelphia American Life Insurance?

These were recommended to me by 2 different people that retired and both like the one they went with.

I didn’t realize health insurance was that much. When we retire we can keep our insurance for $500 per month and I had enough in a fund that it paid for my insurance for 17 months after I retired until I had to start paying the $500 and they just take that out of my monthly pension check.

Health insurance is super expensive. Most large companies if they cover you foot close to 2/3 the bill before they ask you to dip into your paycheck.

Of course, not having it, sigh, even worse.
