What if one thinks out of the box and puts a hinge in the middle of the door as well as one on the roof? Tesla Model X.Yeah, there's no half-opening a full wing to get out! But most gull wings honestly take less space than a side-swinging door.
It depends on where the hinge point is, but most are smart enough to move it toward the centerline of the roof. It’s a compromise, as you give up roof strength by moving the hinge toward center (think T-tops), but if you move the hinge far enough inboard, you can create a scenario where the door never even swings out farther than the full-closed position.
