Yup, similar here - we've got a fair selection of taxes and fees too. 5.5% sales tax on the sale price the first time you put a vehicle on the road, yearly registration fees also based on combined GVWR - truck, trailer, all cargo combined, starting at 6000 lbs, incrementally increasing. yearly excise tax based on the initial sticker price of the vehicle starting at 2.4% and tiered down to 0.4% after 7(?) years, so even a 20+ year old vehicle you still pay that tax every year. our trailer registrations are cheap though. lots of people from other states register here.We actually do have weight based road tax in addition to the regular fuel tax but it starts at 55k tagged weight and above.
i'm sure that overall, we're probably cheaper than any similarly developed country, but some of that is balanced by it being part of our culture and geography - it's a big open space. and many of us have large commutes to make daily and public transportation doesn't exist. every level of government still seems to be getting its piece of the pie, and in general, most essential services are getting funded without doubling our fuel price and other taxes to match some countries. It's a balance for certain when it comes to how much we have to pay in taxes vs. what services we get for those taxes.
