Moving a couple truck loads of locust that I was able to get a few weeks back.

What is locust like for firewood ? We don't have any here.
High BTU content: right up there with Oaks and Sugar Maple. Coals well.

I've not burned a lot of it, since the better logs I save for when I need some rot resistant wood. My impression is that it's a little harder to get started burning than some other hardwood species, so I tend not to use it for firing up a cold stove. Once the fire gets going, it's good stuff for those really cold days.

So it grows over there in Monkton ? I didn't realize that. For some reason I thought it was a mid Atlantic hardwood species. Do you have enough to be commonly used for fence posts in your area ?

It's fairly common here, but it's not a native species. I suspect some farmers planted it generations ago for fence posts, sill plates, etc. I don't often see it in the deep woods, so I'm guessing it is only moderately shade tolerant.

We have more cedar on our property than Black Locust, so that tends to get used more for fence posts. I will use it for the posts I need to hold up a gate I need to install at a back entrance to our property. It should last a lot longer than the Cedar.

I did use a fair amount of Black Locust for the construction of various obstacles for the course we built on our trails in the woods back when my wife was running Tough Mudders and Spartan races (she is NOT a runner, but was pretty darn good at the obstacles). We also used it for the railings and corner posts for the pavilion we built out near our pond. (We hired our neighbor to build it for us, since he is much better at that sort of thing than I am. I think he had fun with it, but he did comment that Black Locust is a pain in the butt to work with.)

I been moving wood into the shed between rain events lately. It wasn't a very good summer here for drying wood with all the rain and high humidity. But still, I am amazed at how dry it actually is compared to last April and early May when I split it. Not ready to burn but another summer in the shed will fix that.

I know everyone loves photos, but this week I failed to take any. We cut down and stacked 5 trees on Saturday, four Ash + one Maple. The ash were all standing dead from Emerald Ash Borer, and the Maple blew over in a storm.

I just cut them to 15 foot lengths and pile them by year, staging until I have room in my wood sheds to split and stack them. I have reduced my split and stacked space down from about 30 cords to 17 bays each just over 1 cord... probably about 20 cords of stacked and split. We usually have 6 - 10 cords in log form, but don't track that as closely.
