Do You Have a Tractor Shed/Barn?

Very nice upgrade. How long did the tent thing last?

My tractors sleep in the pole barn, Jeep goes in the one car (old) garage in the winter, but I'm seriously considering a "car port" or similar to park the two other veh's under - to get them out of the weather.

I recently completed a “tractor shed” near the back of my pole barn. It is 25 ft long x 10 ft wide and was originally an open back porch, that I intended to use as my woodshed.

I live in a spot (upstate Western NY) that gets a fair amount of bright sunny days, consistent rain, and occasional heavy snow. All that stuff makes inside storage for tractors a very important thing, and no matter how much of that space I have, it seemed like it was never enough.

I ended up building a new 6 ft x 25 ft porch (with a 1-1/2 ft overhang) on the back of that 10 ft wide original porch, and that’s now my “new” woodshed. That one has a 24 face cord capacity, which is about (4) average winters worth to heat our well insulated 2000 sq ft house.

I enclosed the original back porch with repurposed old barn wood, including the nice big swinging doors, sized to fit my largest tractor (John Deere 4120) in and out. That tractor just fits in there lengthwise, with a 5 ft heavy duty Bush-hog attached. That stays on the tractor most of the time, and only leaves the shed itself when I’m using it.

There is enough extra room on the side of the shed, so that I can stack up large, unsplit rounds of firewood. I then use the tractor shed as a “splitter shed” on rainy days in the summer. I stay dry, while splitting in there with my hydraulic splitter, and under the canopy of that tractor while transporting the split stuff back to the new woodshed (that’s why that has a wide overhang). I don’t mind the rainy days in the summer at all now, because I usually have some splitting to do.

One of the nicest things about that tractor shed, is always providing a dry, level place to keep the Bushhog. Putting that on and off the tractor was a lot more difficult when it was always kept in random, non-level spots. Now it’s a breeze and taking it on and off to do other work with the tractor is no problem.

That’s an especially important thing for me now, because my only other 3 point hitch tractor (1951 Ford 8n) is down and out, and likely will be until winter, when I have a little more free time to work on it.

This tractor shed is really a 4 purpose shed. Its primary usage is to store my biggest tractor and Bush hog. Ive already mentioned the rainy wood splitting.

Other uses include: a comfortable indoor blind for deer hunting. That’s where the crank out window on the opposite end of the swinging doors comes in handy. Some standing corn and a little turnip food plot planted about 75 yards away helps out with that part, as does a nice padded office chair sitting next to the Bush-hog.

In the winter, I’ll leave the Bushhog there, put a rear plow on the Deere, and move it over to the same size open side porch, where I can keep it plugged into a block heater that is switched inside of my house. That will free up space in the tractor shed, so that I can keep my field car (Dodge Durango) in there thru the winter. It will be real nice not to have to shovel snow off of that when I want to use it.

If my pond freezes (never did last winter) I use the field car to drive back there to skate. I also use it to go deer hunting (sneak down wind of them) during our late and holiday muzzleloader deer seasons.

My neighbor lost two of those tent sheds already to storms. I think insurance paid for them.

Hurricane clips or the like, are code here. Most roofs are under built and go down with snow loads.

I built a small metal shed, collapsed under 3' snow, had to rebuild roof with reinforcement. 3 feet snow is rare here.
