Seems John Deere put unsynchronized transmissions in many of its compact tractors built in the 90's and early 2000's. If you have one of these, how has loader work been for you? We are seeing 770's and 790 tractors come up FS.

I used to run an old IH 574 loader at the farm. It was all I knew, but now with a hydro, it was a horrible loader. We wore out the shift linkage several times while I was a kid. We did load thousands of loads of manure with it though. If I were ever going to do a significant amount of loader work I'd personally look for a hydro.

My 2005 5105 doesn't have a loader. The only synchro is between low and reverse ranges. You still have to clutch and shift to change direction. To make it worse, speeds in reverse range are higher than in low forward range. To back up at the same speed I have to shift the main transmission too. If I had to do loader work on it, or mowing that involves a lot of backing up like I have to do in California, I'd disllike the transmission even more.

Many of the shuttle transmissions have a faster reverse then forward, more power with throttle to dig into a pile or scoop up, then reverse and back out to dump and reduce the throttle to have the same travel speed.

The power reverser transmissions allow for clutch-less forward and reverse shifts at lower speeds for loader work.

Other than Kubota’s glide shift transmission most of the power reserver units are higher horsepower tractors although there may be ones I’m not familiar with.

My 1070 (pre-790) doesn't have synchronized gears. It's no big deal once you learn the throttle/rpm of the gear you are going to. Never had a problem with doing loader work. I taught a young woman how to run a baler from it (2 stage clutch). She had never operated a geared vehicle of any sort. Picked it up on the way to the fields.

Massey Ferguson has power shuttle transmission available in many of the 40+hp machines, and I think TYM has them starting in the 50 hps or so range.

I like HST, but also, a Well Done powershuttle really had about all the advantages of an HST too. I belive many (most?) PST can shift between gears in the Same range will moving, as well as forward to back; but I think you need to come to a stop to change ranges? My PST experience is on front end loaders, reach forklifts, back hoes, and in those applications, it's fantastic, but those all had a single range, 3 or 5 speed, that could be shifted on the fly.

I'm thinking maybe I should look newer and look for a HST.
I think you should too. I know someone with a late 80’s JD with a manual transmission and he pretty good with it. I’m not sure if it has any synchros or not. He has had both knees replaced too but gets along well with it.

Locally found a 2001 John Jeere 4700 with less than 200 hours on it AND is hydrostatic. Asking over 30K for it and looking at them on-line seems to be waaaaay to much.

I had one of those 2000 year unsynchronized manual transmission JDs for 22 years. Yes I used it and did work. No I would never buy one of those again.

That is way too much for a 2001 tractor. You may as well buy new and get 5+ years no interest financing if you are going to pay $30K.

I’m not sure on the price of that 4700. Might sound high but these days maybe not. I assume it comes with a loader. Any other attachments? That’s very low hours, it pre emissions and it’s a pretty good size with a pretty powerful loader. Looking at tractor data I’d say with a loader it cost $30k new or a little less.

I looked thought several tractor sales sites and found them listed at 15 to 20K all with many hours. This local one has a aftermarket cab that look awful and three point blade that looked near new. Not sure the blade and low hours would add 10K to the price.

To me, and this is just me, the emissions thing is over rated concern. Sure, you dont really want the added cost of the system on a new machine, but I wouldn't pay new machine prices for a used machine Just to avoid emissions. Now, if the used machine is a good fit, at a good price, sure; but not worth a premium.

Certainly not the blade.

On the high dollar side, but someone will get it and have a good tractor, IMO. Doesn't sound like it will be you. You could offer less and see what happens.

We will contact the owner of 2001 John Deere 4700 but dropping its price by 10K seems unrealistic.

John Deere 4700 Retailer says,,,,,,, Just dropped the price from 3495 to 3195. Also remember you will not have to pay sales tax on it through me either so that's saving you another $2000.
