Yanmar SA424
First time needing to use my rear PTO on my 2022 SA424. I have searched and found only 1 other discussion on the topic which was not helpful. I also found a YT video which I think was from the same person in the post. In the thread, the salesman showed the OP that all the units on the lot made this sound.

Is there something wrong, or is this normal? It gets a bit better as I raise the RPMs, but not a whole lot.

Curious if I need to take it in and have it looked at or this is just the way these are...

While it sounds a bit loud, the cameras often pick this noises too much and makes it sound a lot worse.

It could very well be normal as there is no load on the PTO and there are gears and splines and what not that are just rattling around. Try hooking a PTO implement and do the same test. It may quiet it down.

Do you have the right oil in there. That sight glass is showing something like ATF. Seems pretty thin for a gear housing. As Ptsg says, a free running PTO could be a little noisy.

I would hope so. That is the color of the hydraulic fluid it came with. The 50 hour service kit I bought also has the same red oil.
That is a good point. I did not think of that. I am hoping someone with an SA series will chime in and compare.

The sound seems to completely overwhelm the engine which by the way sounds really quiet for a diesel

Never heard any other tractors PTO engaged with no load sound like that. TYM, JD, Branson, Case, "Old Yanmar," Ford, etc.

I guess newer Yanmar has no problem marketing them that way. I guess if it goes away once the PTO is actually in use it really is no problem.

If the sound goes away when you put the PTO under load there is not an issue. The design of the PTO clutches gives them a little slip when they are not under load. If the sound remains once you hook up an implement and put it under load, you should see your dealer.

What kind of clutch design, slips when there’s no torque load, and stops slipping when there’s a load?
I don’t see how that would even work. If there’s no load, what would cause it to slip? Do you have a drawing of such a design?
I’m interested.

To me it sounds like excessive gear teeth backlash, or malformed gear teeth that haven’t been run in and mated yet

I don't have a drawing, but I have worked with these, taken them apart, examined, and know that the sound is normal when the PTO isn't under load. There are steel plates with tabs and friction disks between them. The tabs are what is making the noise. When under load, the steel plates do not move.
