I have found some info on this but wanted to narrow the conversation to be certain.
I have thought for a good while about installing a hyd motor onto a pto driven post hole digger. We don't have stones but we certainly have tree roots.

A thought popped into my mind when talking with a nephew who really needs a hyd driven digger due to roots. Will the post hole digger have any issue with reversing the direction? The only reason for reverse is to free it from tree roots so not trying to run it backwards much.

Also, any suggestions on a motor to run the digger? Do they have a direct drive suitable motor?

Thanks for your help. Kenneth

PS: I got out of my farming about four years ago. I slowly sold most family equipment and kept a few items. Ended up with three Kubotas from 27 to 68 hp. Even stopped buy diesel in a 150 gallon tank due to how much the use dropped. Now looking towards retirement following my wife who is now the bigger tractor user. I enjoy helping her learn the front end loader. She was always good with rear mower. This got me off here as I really was not using tractor nor equipment much. Again thank you.

Kt,
Motor size depends on several variables some of which are, torque required, RPM required, flow available, pressure available actual differential across motor.

Trying to direct drive you need bearings strong enough to support the thrust or pull load when pulling auger out of the hole and if loader mounted pushing into the hole. I think most augers have gear box for this reason and also step down motor speed to keep motor smaller.

Most motors will operate both directions so reverse is not a problem for the motor.

Are you considering converting an existing PTO unit or looking for new hydraulic drive unit?

I believe both Digga & Danuser make hydraulic drive augers but sure in what sizes.

I've only drilled a few holes with it so far, but I'm very happy with the hydrualic conversion on my post hole digger. Surplus center sells splined shaft motors that attach to PTO shafts.

Surplus center has hyd motors to PTO shaft. I believe that's what your looking for? You would still use the gear box so just want to delete the drive shaft correct?

Sorry for the delay, work got in the way.

I am wanting to basically replace the pto power and installed hyd motor to replace that. I realize there are true hyd powered digger, but price is way beyond what I can justify for my seldom need.

Of course if you have the equipment it is amazing the jobs you NOW HAVE to do.

Thanks for your info. KT

WOW! Great details and job. Now to take your info and the others thoughts need to get with my nephew (who needs it more than I) and see what we can do. I really do appreciate each one's input.
