It's bad enough I have to rent my paid off 8 acres, shop and home for the rest of my life. I'll choose to live where I don't have to register my livestock and the state doesn't get to bill me for resources on my own damn property.

Are private wells required to be metered and tax and can a basic septic even be permitted?

Many areas are pushing to meter private wells starting with larger users first.

Ad for septic... it's full blown engineering with required service agreements, pumps, dosing, sand mounds, etc.

A lot of it here depends on a few things. No wells in the city as they have municipal water systems. Wells in the county require a permit before installation. Then it's yours. No metering.

Similar with septic. Has to get a perk test, and plan submitted and approved, then permit is issued. Has to be installed by a licensed contractor. A lot depends on soil type and housing density. About 40 years ago they started packing in expensive housing in large neighborhoods. Fast forward 25 years and septics started to fail, nitrates and nitrites started showing up in the wells. Uh-oh. So regs got a bit stricter on new construction, density, soil types. Many mound systems had to be installed to replace failed traditional systems.

Again, a lot depends on soil type, housing density, aquifer, etc., but overall, it's pretty cheap all things considered.

I passed through St Louis 25+ years ago... that has been the extent of time in country...

Western WA does remind me a lot of the Alps.

According to the news, the Admin plan is to transfer the debt from those who took the loan to those who didn't.

I am trying to be "good" but it is not easy. This really ticks me off. The freebies are going to destroy our country.

I’ve seen that too. The increased tax rate goes to fund the police/fire and then a chunk of the previous general fund allocation is reappropriated for other purposes that weren’t on the ballot.

Local politicians are training for a bigger stage and need to get their practice.

I think my neighbors spent 40K on theirs 4 years ago, labor is high around here.
They did a crappy job on seeding in, so we went over and fixed it before it turned to a mud mound.

We had to let the drain field settle for a year. I had a guy till it and level it afterward...I seeded and covered in straw. Came in really nice.

That's an interesting perspective, how it's done in other countries. I know in some, college is 100% state funded; BUT only available to students to do well enough on a state exam (or of coarse who have political connections); don't know how wide spread this is globally. You do still see a very large number of connected non-US people sending their kids to US colleges.

My worry with a free model (I know free is the wrong word; more like non-user paid); is, it encourages people to kinda hang out in college. The real goal of college should always be to get the heck out of college and use that education to make money. As someone above mentioned; the student needs "skin in the game".

I do work around some people who get free college. based on employee programs; and 85% don't use it; maybe 5% use it as intended to improve their career; and about 10% seem to just stay taking classes unrelated to any profession, just cause they enjoy college....

I don't 100% disagree with government subsidizing Specific, Limited, and proven in critical demand, degrees; but my fear would be; that would be used/abused by politicians, and it would turn from maybe we Need petro-chemical engineers critically; but congress says we subsidize gender studies and Indian cultural studies...

Tripple that here. County forced 3 tanks, pumped and aerated. Soils not an issue. They enforced it because they can.

5x that here. Just had one put in about two years ago. It was a bureaucratic nightmare. Architects, Consultants, Designers, Builder....County People.....

Horrible, took way too long. Really no help. Without it, they condemn the property.
