Lots

Insurance may be mandated via government such as flood and is seen as a right.

Earthquake not mandated but is a right through the State.

Unemployment Insurance and Health Insurance are often termed a right at least here as well as Workers Comp.
And all that government meddling drives up the cost of insurance to the consumer.

The insurance industry is said to be the most regulated industry there is in existence.

I always think it's medical but I have never been in finance.

Just in my tenure the regs have morphed into volumes plus many overlapping agencies from every level having jurisdiction.

Imagine if Insurance was regulated the same as medical where every person that comes to the ER must be seen/treated, etc with zero regard to the ability to pay and if the customer is sent away or otherwise not offered the total menu of services the provider is liable for any shortcomings?

Maybe there would be more competition if insurance didn't come with a mandate?

Still plenty drivers in the road with no insurance or drivers license and Max DMV penalty is revoking license so if you drive without the DMV is out of the picture.

You have a good chance of vehicle impound but if you drive a worthless car with expired tags you might come out ahead...

I've been hit 3 times over the years and drivers no license or insurance...
The insurance industry has not traditionally advocated for mandatory auto insurance policies. They have traditionally favored selling their customers "uninsured/underinsured motorist policies" which you buy to protect you from the other guy who is at fault and is unable either through insufficent insurance coverage, or none, (because he is a deadbeat) to be able to pay your loss.

One reason is that they have already underwritten you and know your track record and can accurately underwrite their loss probability with you for that coverage. Another is they don't want to be forced to take those who are too financially irresponsible to purchase liability coverage to pay for the damages caused by their own negligence.

Several years back Texas was being pushed to allow illegal aliens to obtain drivers licenses. One of the main reasons given was that it would allow them to get to and from work so they could 'contribute to society'. In order to do so they had to be able to get insurance, minimum limits. Some insurance companies took a low profile and some just said they would follow the law. I argued against it for the above reasons and because it would 'normalize' illegal aliens and would be a first step to them getting Drivers Licenses in Texas. Next step was to get voting ability. The effort was not passed in either chamber of the legislature. I was just one small voice crying in the wind but a lot more were also crying out and the opposition was successful.

@ultrarunner, isn't it true that some pats of Cali now have illegals voting in some local elections and wasn't the Elections official for San Francisco an illegal alien? Didn't the state also mandate insurance availability for illegals and Cali Drivers Licenses?
Back then those who objected to DL's and insurance for illegal aliens were ridiculed as prejudiced and harsh. They knew then that they were pushing toward voter eligibility for illegals. What you have wound up with is a lack of availability of insurance coverage for your taxpayers. It still remains tbd if illegals will wind up getting to vote.

Yes... some are statewide and others more limited to cities such as San Francisco...

We always have plenty of new laws and one is that bars must have available test kits so patrons can screen for date rape drugs.

Another is mandates that require Narcan be available to counter drug overdose...

Maybe I am incorrect but isn't that the case now? If ten people are brought into an ER as the result of a car wreck aren't they ALL treated and the bill is paid either by their insurance company or them or the county/state under medicade?

Is California opening the door to illegals being allowed to vote, in your opinion?

Not always and where there is reimbursement from an agency the level is often below the cost of providing care.

So what happens then? The for profit hospital corp doesn't just eat that bill, do they?
They will raise their rates and fees so any other patients have to pay for it.
If it's a county hospital or a charity hospital I'm pretty sure they will get paid by Medicade if they are on the Medicade rolls. If not, the hospital signs them up for it. Medicade also has a first lien on any liability insurance settlement; meaning they get first money on any settlement and the liability carrier MUST protect Medicare first. Ultimately, the taxpaying citizens pay the bills.

Thete is s definite segment pushing for this but so far the inroads are city level elections.

California automatically registers you when you turn 18...
Oh, so just so far it's only city elections. And what is stopping them from voting in state and federal elections with the same credentials they use to vote in local elections?
