In 20 years, all new tractors will be all electric. That is my prediction - it may happen sooner. Just like plow horses, all these stinky diesel tractors will be put out to pasture.

So by stinky you mean tier zero emissions?

Considering that the average homeowner uses their tractor only 50-100 hours per year they should be forced into electric. It will be "good enough" for those users. Same goes with any homeowner power tools bought in big box stores - should be battery or plug in only.

I can't see farmers being able to rely on EV tech for planting and harvesting. It's bad enough now getting forced into a standing regen for DPF or your machine getting stuck in limp mode due to DEF and computerized emissions equipment issues.

I could see EV being used for things like mucking out barns.

Boy I hope you are wrong.
Cause if you are right, farming (and food) will become much too expensive and a lot of people might starve to death.

I could actually like electric trucks & tractors, but the cost of the charging infrastructure coupled with the new electric equipment itself would break this farmer. I can barely afford the old diesel stuff I have.

Probably will be retired by the time those mandates destroy farming.

Maybe why Californian is different...

Areas with the bulk of population are mostly coastal where even frost is a rarity.. and a home with central A/C is hard to find in San Francisco...

Maybe mild climates and EV are a perfect match?

I'm not a farmer but put 200 to 300+ per year on each of 2 tractors. Wore out a bucket twice (in 15 years) moving dirt/gravel fixing/building roads and repairing flash flood damage. One of those floods required 120+ dump truck loads to fill the hole carved into the emergency spillway. Had to fix it quickly to avoid dam failure and wipe out folks down stream. Private dam so no county help.... just me and a friend, 1 dump truck, 1 little dozer and a couple of tractors.
We also provided clay and rock for the county to rebuild a couple of road in the next holler so people could get in and out of their homes.
If I had electric it would have to be able to work 18+ hours at a shot not just a 4 to 8.
Been out in driving rain for hours unblocking culverts and pushing/pulling logs blocking the bridges or roads around here. These parts not many wait for the county crew to clear a problem, easier and faster to grab your tools and git er done.
As for battery power tools, the are useful until you have a big long job for any of them. I have air, plug in and battery tools they all serve a purpose. Just like hand tools are still needed IMHO.

Forcing people, even “homeowners”, into a choice that the government thinks is the best for them, is basically authoritarianism.

We don’t play that here.

The local electric company has been begging people the last week to conserve energy to avoid having blackouts. Everyone charging their electric tractor and car should cope well with electric problems. Don’t worry they’ll just build more solar panels. I heard they work good when it’s dark and snowing.

We already played it here when they shoved DEF down your throat.

Naahhh.
Having to add DEF fluid to a diesel engine is a minor annoyance compared to having no diesel engine at all.

Promoting free choice?

   / electric vehicles #37
In a way, YES it does promote free choice. Stop-no problems. Don’t stop- $109.50.

In an authoritarian country, we’d have homeowners forced to drive electric tractors and no other choice.

I should never be forced into owning an EV tractor. Garuanteed if a homeowner who makes up a fraction of tractor sales is forced into EV tractor adoption. Guess who else will be forced into it. You got it. Farmers. Just like teir 4 emmissions was forced onto you. Its a crappy technology. Its so bad that the military never adopted it. Funny how that works. So trust me. The only "industry" that won't be forced into adoption is the military. Farmers will absolutely be forced into it. Hell that side is keeps screaming about cow farts
