Dang rain and warm air!

The snow has come, a bit at a time, but with it comes rain and warm air. The stuff won't clear the blower shoot, and the ground is so soft a blade rips everything up. There is water flowing over the ground where I usually have a 5 foot pile...

Cooler air is expected....

Plowed my place yesterday in the heat of the afternoon at -3*f. This morning we saw -25*f. I dream of one day tapping into the 26gpm loader hydraulic system for 3rd function/remotes up front, and an 84" hydraulic snow blower up front

I do my 2 miles of road and the rest of my plowing with a 9.5' V-plow which is on my single cab 3/4 ton Dodge right now.

Fuel gelling is caused when parafin molecules get cold enough to stick to each other.
This temperature is known as the "cloud point" because the fuel turns cloudy looking as the molecules start to stick together.
Anti gel treatment surrounds each molecule of parafin with a coating that keeps them from adhering to each other.
You must surround these molecules with anti-gel BEFORE they start to stick together.
If the cloud point is reached before treatment, and molecules are starting to form wax, you cannot unjell that fuel without warming the fuel to above the cloud point. Then, the anti-gel can surround each molecule.
The best procedure is to add your treatment before you fill your can, then add the relatively warm fuel from the underground tank. If the fuel has been exposed to cloud point temps, treat it, then bring the can into a warm place until the fuel gets above the cloud point. You could safely figure that 30* F would be the cloud point. Cloud point can be somewhat lower, like 18-20*F

Some fuel will cloud above 30F, 45F is a safer temp.

We got about 5" of wet heavy stuff at 30ish degrees, then it froze, and a few more inches of light fluffy stuff on top. -5F here now, the sun is out, nice white blanket of snow! (y)

My diesel started yesterday at -37f. I dont use any additives. But our dealers here have winter blend diesel. I also use block heaters.

On our trails today. The lake has tuned on and we might have seen 2 feet in the last 48 hours. No not lots, but i least could start rolling snow in my blade. Gosh its nice to have some real snow depth.

Friday we had -37F, we lost water for a day but rectified that problem quickly. Even this morning it was -30F, it beat last years cold of -33F. I'm working on getting a pan heater for my HST so the fluids are little warmer each time I use the block heater.

I remember driving home one night and thinking if there is a time for a breakdown, please not now, with it -40f outside. Sure enough, the temp needle started to climb - of all things, it's overheating. 50/50 glycol is good, more or less is not better. Who needs -40f protection. Lesson learned. I stopped at a farm, sure enough they were out back trying to unthaw a tractor to plow snow. Those coveralls I stashed under the back seat that were rarely used went on real quick.

Keweenaw Roads reported 30" of snow between January 11 and January 14. Check out our local webcams for a glimpse at the fluffy winter wonderland we are currently living in.

I have always shot for 60/40 which gives about the maximum protection.
60% antifreeze and 40%water, I have heard that 70% antifreeze is better but I don't recall that amount being on the bottle charts.

Well I did find a chart for 70% antifreeze;

I never go over 50/50. I had a radiator freeze up on 60/40 before in montana -60°.

mechanic told me never go over 50/50.

but looking at your chart, now I’m confused.

I've always been told maximum freeze protection is 2/3rds coolant-1/3rd water.
However, the heat transfer ability of the coolant decreases as the percentage of AF/water increases.
Lots of lake-effect here in the Tip of the Mitt!

I wonder if changes in anti-freeze formulas are behind the confusing labels these days. As a kid in a garage decades ago, I vividly remember the anti-freeze mix ratio of 50-50 as the optimum protection and read the chart many, many times.

The only thing that could have changed between then and now is product formulation?
