MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - According to the National Weather Service, Lake Superior is much warmer than it usually is this time of year.

Meteorologists say the average near-surface temperature for mid-January is in the mid-thirties, but the lake is around 41°F right now. The National Weather Service says the warm temperatures could bring extra lake-effect snow in the next week.

Matt Zika, a National Weather Service meteorologist, says the lake’s temperatures could be back to normal soon.

“Given how cold it’s going to be with daily high temperatures probably not even getting out of the single digits from Sunday through the middle of next week, it won’t take very long for the water temperature to cool down close to where it typically would be at this time in the month of January,” said Zika.

All that water is quite the heat sink. I'm thinking it would take way more than a few weeks to catch up to "normal" temps.

Man, we are getting snow now! We are getting a rare lake effect wind from the east over lake michigan and it is a white-out. It isn't going to last long, but sure is pretty.

We got maybe 2 inches last night, it’s hard to tell since I think it switched back and forth to rain a few times. I plowed the driveway, foggy and a heavy mist, it was about like plowing thick tomato soup.

Clear skies and a low of -37C overnight (-43C with the wind chill). Way too cold to be outside for any length of time. Should get to a balmy -24C today. Burning lots of wood and supplementing with electric heat.

Won't see snow until late Monday.

It's coming here and soon. Chicago got 10" and it's coming our way. Started up both the Kubota's and warming them up presently. Always start and no block heaters either, just good batteries and clean connections. 10 seconds of pre heat, half turn and off to the races.

Keep in mind that both are high hour tractors and 2000 and 2002 vintage. 6700 and 4600 hours respectively.

We are in the middle of a blizzard.
Sustained winds at 30 with gusts over 40.
14° F. actual temperature.
10" of snow predicted today and strong winds through out the night.
And we just had 10.8" of snow three days ago.

-34C this morning but thankfully no wind chill and the sun is shining. Next snowfall predicted on Monday and the temps will start rising tomorrow, with normal temps returning Monday. Then by the end of the week and for all of the following it is supposed to get above normal and rain everyday.

Apparently there is no normal any more, not the weather or all the other craziness going on in the world today.
