I’m glad I’m an old fart and probably won’t see the results of the current administrations war on diesel, well war on anything carbon!

I do feel sorry for my kids, and even more so my grandkids
Meanwhile your kids and grandkids are facing the future and living their lives, adopting new technology and ways of doing things. Not concerned that their world isn’t the same as their grandparent’s world. I know that I have never missed or used a coal furnace like my grandfather did.

My great gran dad made a living raising draft horses in iowa. Once the tractors came, it killed his business. Without new technologies, this forum would still be called Horsebynet.

Don't think the gov was pushing tractors on people in order to eliminate the horses. That is the difference. My grandfather farmed with horses, and used coal stoves. No one came along forcing him to give up his horses, or his coal. And electric isn't new technology, it's going back almost 100 years, when streetcars were developed using electric power, and replaced by ICE for a reason.

Once the ICE is gone & the world is covered with EV’s and solar panels, the same “geniuses” will be complaining we killed a million minority children mining battery minerals, but they won’t blame themselves for anything.

I'm planning an engine swap into an older vehicle that otherwise would have had ZERO emission controls (pre 1970).

I'm still trying to figure out which basic drivetrain I wish to put in. One option is one of the Cummins engines, and everything indicates that they have gotten much better over the last 20 years or so. More powerful and more fuel efficient.

There would be a valid argument to DPF delete it (or just not install the DPF), which would largely be unregulated in the pre 1970 vehicles.

So, if that is a consideration, should I purchase one of the DPF delete kits while one can still generally purchase them? Otherwise reprogramming the computers could be a nightmare.

I doubt they'll be vanishing. The RAM Cummins pickups are very popular, and generally have a good reputation, especially the engines. If RAM chooses to stop putting diesel engines in their 2500/3500 series pickups, I think the market share for the 2500/3500 line will collapse very quickly, and the 1500 line will follow just behind them. Nor do I expect RAM will shift to Ford, GM, Detroit, or International engines. Probably not FIAT engines either. They would take a beating for doing it. Would CAT or John Deere choose to start producing small pickup engines?

We could see some changes in the Cummins offerings. The 5.0L Cummins puttered out. The 5.9 is from yesteryear. And now the 6.7 might not be quite what they want. Will we see another Cummins V8?

The question that is hard to predict is what will happen with the electric vehicles. RAM EVs are coming. So far none of the manufactures have entered the heavy duty EV pickup market, although there are a few local delivery trucks available, and now a couple of long haul trucks. Chevy has announced a Silverado EV heavy duty towing WT model, but it is still vaporware. I'd anticipate that we'll see more and more EVs replacing the 150/1500 lines of pickups while the diesels will remain king of the 2500/3500/4500 series vehicles for at least another 2 decades. Greener Diesel?

Fuel Agnostic Cummins?
6,9,and 15 liter displacements

starting with 6.7 Gasoline in 2024

PS. Ford class action over the CP 4
and now Bosch is in it as well over the CP 4.

As far as the coal, there likely were big changes over the years. In the rural areas, perhaps there was a push to replace coal with heating oil. Easier, no mess.

And in the cities, I imagine there was also a big push to get rid of the coal, and change over to the much "cleaner" natural gas. I had a house with an old coal chute, unused for decades. It is quite likely everyone was forced to change over.

I can remember as a kid going down to Disney Land. I was mostly interested in all the kid's stuff, but my grandparents complained about the LA SMOG. And it wasn't just LA, but many big urban centers across the USA. St Louis?

The USA has put a lot of work into making the air cleaner, as well as cleaning the waterways. There is still more that needs to be done, but it is a big start.

One can complain about California, but they had big problems in the past and a lot of work to make things better.

One of the problems is urban vs rural needs. However, one of the small towns in Oregon that struggles with air quality is Oakridge with everyone burning wood and poor air circulation. Still, the urban environment and the rural environment is different. The problem isn't the little 20 to 30 HP garden tractors that get a few hours a month. It can take me months, or sometimes even years for me to burn up 5 gallons of diesel. Although I would like a tractor that didn't blow black smoke in my own face. A couple of years ago I was talking to a logger that was complaining about new clean air requirements for logging trucks. Again, not a big issue for a few trucks way up in the mountains, even if some of them are hauling logs into the cities.

The Ram 1500 will no longer have a V8 available.

The V8 Ram 1500 Is Dead After 2024

I've been driving the 3.6L RAM for a few years now, and am continually impressed with it.

It gets somewhere around 300 hp which is about the same as the vintage 350 chevy engine. On a good day, I'll get 20MPG to 25MPG empty, and 13MPG to 16MPG towing my trailer. I would like to see stiffer suspension, but otherwise the engine is fine.

My biggest complaint is it doesn't hold me back very well when descending hills. I've really got to downshift hard from about 8th to about 3rd gear, and it still doesn't do well holding me back. I'd love an engine with aggressive regeneration.

Oh, and with the ever shortening pickup beds, I struggle with getting weight forward (impacted by a light engine).

The reason V-8 gassers are dying off is because the truck manufacturers finally figured out they could make a truck lighter and more fuel efficient with smaller turbocharged gas engines.

Only took ‘em 50 years….
