Most recent near-crash: The other guy must have assumed it was a 4-was stop because he rocketed forward from his stop sign just as I reached the crosswalk. I braked hard and stopped just short of t-boning his rear quarter. I saw I had laid down two carlengths of skidmarks avoiding him. And confirmed he had been facing a 'watch for cross traffic' sign along with his stop sign.

Age late 70's then. Apparently my reflexes are still adequate to still be on the road. But like Gale, as I get older I think buying a modern car with some accident-avoidance features will benefit not just me but perhaps whoever is in my path because of its faster-than-human reaction time.

(I should note in 65 years driving, bursting a brake hose during heavy braking is the only time I hit anything. With reduced brake capacity I rolled into someone who had stopped on the freeway far back from the congestion we saw ahead. No damage to my AMC Eagle, minor bend in his Chevy Luv rear crossmember because he had no rear bumper. Five ft shorter stop with functional brakes, would have missed him.)

Saw this today; I have family who are police and said they wouldn't pull this guy over to check, but this looks sketchy to me.

I saw a similarly loaded truck today going eastbound on I-44 through Tulsa, except the truck and Polaris were both being towed behind a class A motorhome!

Are you sure they're really basic 2-way stops, in which the two ways stopping are regular cross-traffic? If so, I agree that is pretty stupid and needlessly redundant... therefore confusing or distracting.

However, around here we only see those "opposing traffic does not stop" or "cross traffic does not stop" signs when the configuration of stop signs is non-standard. We have a lot of old 18th century farm roads and even 16th century Indian trails, that have become very busy country roads or even highways, and it's pretty common to see things like turning traffic having the right of way, while the straight-thru path has a stop sign, as the turning traffic is actually the "main" road. Those are the cases where we see these extra "traffic does not stop" warning signs.

Yes the ones I am talking about are 2-way stops. But they have been adding the "cross traffic does not stop" signs below them. Isn't that what a 2-way stop means?? And I agree that some "wierd" 3-way intersections still need the signs.

The first point on turn arrows is more recent around here as they have added things like the yellow arrow on some intersections. The old way of doing it around here with green arrows was if you had an intersection with a green arrow for left turn, you could ONLY go on the green arrow. So you were stuck sitting there at midnight with nobody on the road (well, if you wanted to be complaint...) until the arrow went green. On a lot of intersections now, they have added a way for you to go if it is clear with either the yellow arrow or the plain green light (not arrow). So since it is a change from how they did it for 50+ years, sure I can see them posting a sign alongside that to explain the new method.

All of the intersections I have seen in my 40+ years of driving (until recently) have either 3 or 4 lights in the left turn lane. They are red, yellow, green, and sometimes a green arrow below that. Easy to understand: on red you stop, on yellow get ready to stop, on green light you can turn left but need to yield to oncoming traffic (they also have green), on green arrow you can go left and the oncoming traffic still has a red. That's my point -- that is how it always worked and was easy. But people today don't know what to do so now they are adding yellow turn arrows and signs telling you when you are allowed to turn.

Sounds like he had the "new" signs with the cross traffic warning below them and STILL didn't know what to do. So neither the old or new way would have helped this challenged driver.

Pretty soon we will need to have entire placards hanging at every street sign and stoplight. Reminds me of Five Man Electrical Band ....
