I’ve never used a raker depth gauge. I bump the rakers on a bench grinder. When the grinder marks start getting polished out I’ll bump them again.
I don't use a grinder at all. I prefer to hand sharpen. It gives me an excuse to take a break and take stock of how I'm doing (I'll notice a dull chain in an instant and stop to deal with it. However, I often don't notice how tired or dehydrated I'm getting until I stop and take a break for a few minutes.)

Usually I pull the splitter to the dead tree where I cut and split it. But a large, leaning, locust finally fell this summer when I didn't have much time to clean it up, so I sectioned it in 6' lengths and stacked them at my drive. Finally got around to setting them on horses for cutting to 16" lengths to split.
I like to bring the wood by grapple in "long lengths" to where the wood is easier to get to when splitting, but it does leave a lot of debris there. My "long length" is some multiple of my 18" firewood length.

I realized this weekend that I need to get my splitter farther off the ground. I only used it for a couple of hours in Friday, but my back has been out all weekend.

I didn't have this problem 40 years ago!!! 20231022_154619.jpg

Hauled hemlock saw logs back to mill for a guy. I probably should post this in pics of people hauling something wrong. It was only about a third of a mile from the landing to my house.
lol y’a that’s a good one but for the distance it’s what ever … but its still something, the rear wheels of the truck want to get off the ground!

The wheels did spin on one loose gravel spot but at <10 mph I wasn’t too concerned.

Marketplace score. Sugar maple. Not done picking it all up yet either, probably three more 5X10 trailer loads to go. Sorry, put my tractor away before I took the photos.
Curious - some of the rounds in these photos are anywhere from 21" - 24" long. For those who heat with firewood, would you split the difference and get 11"-12" pieces, or would you cut to the normal 16" - 17" length and have a lot of 5"+ end pieces. It all burns, so probably a moot point.

I know this dosent answer your question but keep in mind a log in a stove burn for same amount of time wether it is a 18” or a 11”, the difference would be BTU generated … I cut my fire wood in place so it is pretty uniforme but it dose happen i end up with a small piece at the end which i would put aside to burn outside, small length log are a pain to pile up in a cord.

Thank you. When I am blocking I make sure I cut to 16". The wood in my photos was a FB marketplace deal and the tree guy must think 16" is a lot longer, lol.

I cut my longer lengths as a multiple of 18" to avoid as much of that as possible. But when there is no choice, I start splitting the difference when I get to about 3 or 4 cuts from the end. I always start from the thick end, so the shorter pieces are smaller diameter and then those get tossed on top of the previous row in the wood pile. It helps the woodpile stability to not have them down lower.
