What is it with Harley riders?

68 Firebird 400 ci was my chick car. Never had a Harley, but wish I did. However, a Firebird has a better backseat. 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨
My dad's Mercury Marauder with it's 390 police interceptor engine had a much better backseat.. Was like a sofa and I used it regularly... :giggle:

It WAS drag racing, until somebody came up with the concept of bracket racing. :(
Bracket racing is just a contest to see who can be the most consistent off the line and their car is also very consistent.
If that's not your bag, you can still race in the various classes.

Straight up drag racing has for a loooooong time become a rich man's contest.... he or she who can spend the most money or get the most sponsors can afford the best equipment and everyone else loses.

Bracket racing allows folks to compete at a budget that they chose and still be competitive with one another based on reaction times and consistency. I really enjoyed bracket racing my little RD400.

On a track (expected) not sitting next to you at a stoplight revving the engine or driving down the road either. Certainly a fart box extraordinaire.

Same thing with Unlimited Hydroplane racing. To the point I think the market shrank so much that the races may be a thing of the past before too long. Back in the day numerous back yard teams or small mechanical shops with a sponsor or two would put out a piston driven hydroplane and the races were fun to watch. Teams helped each other on the beach with tools or whatever. Then came the turbine powered boats and big-name sponsors. Traditional cities that hosted races were Detroit, Madison, Seattle, San Diego, the Tri-Cities, and Evansville. Now San Diego has dropped sponsoring the races. Soon others I expect. If it went back to piston powered, I would be overjoyed. I can only hope.

My apologies. I must have misunderstood the meaning of the term "stock". When a 4 cylinder Mustang II beat cars which guys had been working on all week, drag racing became boring to me.

The only time the term "stock" has been mentioned in this thread has been in reference to mufflers and exhaust.

I rode a Harley as a kid and have always liked the sound. What I don't understand is the habit of gunning the engine when slowing up for a stop sign or whatever. Is this something they teach in "Harley School" or what.

Older guys that still want to appear "tough". They spend $$$ for the riding gear and accessories to look like they are in a motorcycle gang. I wish states would enforce the laws on the books and not allow bikers and cars to modify or disable the muffler.

Nothing screams more douche than that.

On occasion, I see motorcycle riders riding in packs on the interstate.

The reason I moved to the country surrounded by 45 acres of trees is to escape noise pollution created by douche bags.

The movie "Wild Hogs" was just on TV a few nights ago. A pretty good one, IMHO...

Except when you explained why bracket racing leveled the field between guys running stock equipment, and those with money to do anything.

I 1/4 miled my 60 bug against an MG midget and got stopped for racing. The officer knew me by name and he started laughing a little, belittling me that I couldn't even make 50 mph.
He was trying to get me to admit we were racing on a public road, but I stayed the line that he had to have seen my left blinker going and I was trying to pass a slower car.
I hate the sound of the Harleys with no muffler and the helicopter sound coming down a hill.

They just want to be as cool as their dad was back in the day. Or maybe neighbor's dad.

The thing is... Dad's Harley didn't cost 20K. It was probably a government surplus bike bought on the cheap, had straight pipes because dad couldn't afford factory mufflers, and needed to be revved up because dad was trying to squeeze some go out of that heap, and maybe wasn't as good a mechanic as he thought he was.

A lot of stuff like that was born of necessity and became part of the image. I bet more than a few of these guys don't actually know why they do it. They just see it as a "Harley guy thing to do".

They are older because they finally can afford that 20K Harley at this age.

As a teen I was drag racing another fellow on a county in my mom’s Olds Cutlass. Suddenly a blue light in my mirror. oh crap. It was another guy with a Western Auto blue revolving dash light. I had been set up. 🫣😆

Obviously you are at an extremely advanced age.. A base Harley starts at about 25K... And fully equipped CVO... Near 60K.. I have one that i probably have 50K into and another that's near 30K. ..They both make that beautiful noise that you don't understand.

You can get a Low Rider S for around 20k..

But you have to surrender your man card before you do that... Nobody wants that trade off
I have a Street Bob and my wife has a Softail Slim and a Sportster..

I think people put fart cans on their atv's, bikes, snowmobiles for the sound they make.
So guess cause the money been spent might as well take full advantage of making the noise. No???
