Guilty, but Never cared for the "poppy" sound of the cherry bombs.

Way Back in the day Liked the sound of a pair of real Corvair turbo mufflers on a large V8 and sound of Thrush mufflers though and still have "uncappable" Lake pipes after the Hooker Super Comp headers on one car.

I was just looking for a new Flowmaster, 2-in, 2-out to replace the old leaky one in the truck. Imagine my guffaw when I see them for going for about $200. I seem to remember "glass-packs" going for less than $20 when I was in High School.

The old, cheap 'Cherry Bomb' I presume. Rev it up, blow the glass out and good to go.

Dual exhaust and "Hush Thrush" or now "turbo" mufflers, on my hot rods. Never really liked loud exhaust. Except for drag racers, even my (road race) race cars have had mufflers.

I always had stock mufflers on my cars.
Oh.... you're one of 'those'.....

;)

I've had some loud vehicles. Little Yamaha RD400 probably had the most potential for disturbing the peace. Expansion chambers with resonators. Sounds like angry bees with chainsaws from miles away. Could be ridden mildly to reduce disturbing the peace, but what's the fun of that? 🤔

I had a mid 70's GMC 3/4 ton pickup with a 454 and straight pipes. Had to sell that when we had children. Toxic cabin with rust holes in floor and too loud for new baby.

Lastly was the 93 Suburban with 3" single exhaust Thrush glass pack. One of our kids was like a dog, in that she could sense me presence from several blocks away.

Today, everything has stock mufflers, and I sit on our porch and complain about the neighbor's boom stereo as he drives by.

Get off my lawn! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Myself the only things I had that disturb the peace was a Big Red 3 wheeler with a cobra pipe, it did sound pretty good for a big red...I also had a MXZ with a can, that thing was loud and very annoying... My current 450 WR with its FMF pipe and header sound very awesomely good, it will get the adrenaline flowing every time and the braaap is also very good at letting everyone know where you are from many miles away.

"Loud pipes saves lives" - Bonk! Bonk!

I had 'em for one reason - I liked 'em. Mine weren't obnoxiously loud, but certainly louder than stock. There is a point that too loud is Too Loud though. And, knowledgeable riders know that straight through pipes produce less power than properly built mufflers.

There's always been a rif between the "Whoosh" GoldWinger's and Hawgs. I've had 3 'Wings' and two Hawgs over the years, sometimes both at the same time. When it came down to which I'd pick to ride, the Wing would sit in the garage. I've put well over 200K on my Hawgs, probably 300K. I often think back at the great times I had on my Hawg, but somehow thoughts like that never happen about my Wings. Nonetheless, for those that do have memories about their Wing, or other brands, they have my admiration for just getting out there and enjoying life.

Prices these days prohibit me buying either one even if my health did permit. Prices are runnng well over $40K and up to $52K for either one. And maintenance cost would make most people cringe. But - putting cost aside, there's nothing like wind in your face.

That said, I have no problem with a guy on a Hawg, Wing or any other brand giving that right-hand grip a little jerk.

Our method was get that cherry bomb hot and then run a water hose up the tailpipe for a quick cool down. I tried that on my 134 cubic inch Willys jeep. Apparently there wasn’t enough exhaust to make a rumble. My mom didn’t appreciate me doing the same to her Olds Cutlass V8. 😤 😃

Story about that truck and how it taught me a life lesson...

I was following some slowpoke after a rain. He was going ridiculously slow and I got kinda road-ragey, so I'll show him and pass him through the puddles and perhaps splash him for good measure.
Floored it!
Mighty roar!!
Hit the puddle right next to him!
Water went a flyin!!!
YEE HAA!!!

Then the carpets lifted under my feet, water shot up my pants legs, my nose, behind my glasses, my eyes, hit the headliner and collapsed it onto my head. Water covered the inside of the windshield, I couldn't see a thing, I pulled over and stopped....

Aaaaaand the slowpoke passed me and went on his way.

I learned a couple things that day.
One, the floorboards were rotten.
Two, I was a jerk and got what I deserved. :p

I sat there shaking my head and laughing at myself for being a doofus for quit a good while and thinking about how much worse that could have been had I lost control.

Sometimes life gives you subtle messages that you better change your ways. If you don't take notice, it might slap you silly, or worse yet, not give you another chance at all. Life's too short to get worked up about silly things like following slowpokes. You'll get there eventually. ;)

Flowmaster mufflers are mostly stainless steel now, with stainless welds, a real quality item. I think my most recent Flowmaster cat back kit on my 5.7L Hemi pickup was somewhere near $900.

"Loud pipes saves lives" - Bonk! Bonk!

I had 'em for one reason - I liked 'em.
This was exactly my point in first naming this old bit of phrase. I appreciate an honest reason over some made-up BS about safety, every time. :D

I had use of one of the 454 trucks as well, a 1978 dually 4 speed flatbed
Dad bought in new
after about 40k miles and 10 years he talked me into painting it (farm use- door got caved in and other paint damage)... Shortly thereafter went to a new owner.
It always Got just over 10 MPG never seemed to matter whether towing a gooseneck or completely empty. Somewhere I have a pic of it with a 1965 Corvette roadster blocked up and lashed down on the flatbed with a car hauler in tow with a 1967 GTO on it. Brought them from Tacoma to Idaho and got the same 10 MPG there as well.

It was a nice quiet running truck, you could easily hear the AM radio on a long road trip.

I tried the competitor ( Purple Horny) on the Ford 3000 diesel trying to quiet it down and swore it was on fire several times... then it was louder than the stock Ford muffler. SMH

Yes, for a couple of reasons, the first of which is, like I said before, annoying to a lot of people. Secondly, as a few of my schoolmates found out that the local sheriff's deputies took a dim view of loud cars, and if they stopped you for a noise violation, they might see an empty beer can or liquor bottle on the floor or back seat, or notice a bald tire. Being as inconspicuous as possible means not looking for trouble, which is exactly why I had discussions with a few of my drivers who wanted to put straight pipes on the trucks they drove, so they could hear that big Cat engine growl. Not going to happen on any truck I owned or was leased to me. Company policy, period, no argument.
I have made a few calls in the past to report drivers that insist on using their Jake brake in the city limits, which has signs posted at said limits stating that they could be cited for it's use. I called their dispatchers or safety department, not so much to complain, but to let them know to tell their drivers not to use Jakes in this city, as they can be cited and fined. I've seen a few get nailed for it in the past.

Mine got 8mpg. Like you said, loaded or empty.... 8!

Surprisingly, I never got pulled over for noise.

Kinda surprising, really.

yes and 10 over in a quiet car nobody gives a sh|^ but 10 over in a loud car and everybody lose their mind

I'm not a trucker and am ignorant in the subject, so I ask to be educated. How is it that a location can ban the use of the compression brake? Is it, as a brake, a safety feature? How do you tell the driver to not use his extra braking abilities?

I hear things like this, and I think, would it be better to be annoyed by noise or to have a truck strike the house at the bottom of a hill in a quiet zone?

Every time I've heard of these policies being initiated it's always put forth by some ******* low-level politician or local businessman with an inflated sense of self-importance. They're tired of having their comfort interrupted and have the clout to get these signs and policies put in. They're probably just creating quiet zones in-between trips shuttering local shooting ranges, and purchasing beachfront property in other states, closing those beaches previously open to the public.

Is that last one a little specific? Well there are 3 cases of previously public beaches being shut down by out-of-state members of the female anatomy in Maine at this moment.
