88F and mostly cloudy @ 14:30, which beats the predicted high of 86F. HI 99F, DP 73F, HU 65%, AQI 73. Yesterday's high temp was 92.3F.

Yesterday started out reasonably well ... and quickly went to very frustrating.

Started off spraying glyphosate along the driveway heading up towards the shop. Then the pump on that new Greenwood sprayer from HF wouldn't pump up ... no seal at the o-ring on the plunger.

So I unhooked the dump cart and took the Cub up to the compost/woodlot and hit that again.

After that I headed over and had a look at the largest Rose of Sharon bush which is finally blooming:

IMG_2930 copy.jpg

That, along with a bunch of other stuff, is going to need watered pretty soon. But I'm pretty happy with how well it's doing. Hopefully the taller cage will keep the deer off of it.

Then I headed back down and checked the sprayer to see if it would pump up. No dice.

So I brought it down to the garage, took the pump apart and put it back together ... pumps up fine ... 🤬

Loaded it back up in the dump cart and headed over to the unplanted portion of the west planting bed (since I had lost the shade along the driveway) Sprayed a little bit over there.

Then decided I'd get the battery-operated string trimmer out and cut down the tall weeds near that little planting bed at the corner of the second circle.

Got that done and debris raked out of the way so I could spray it. Retrieved the sprayer from where I had left and started spraying again. Sprayer refuses to pump up ... again ... 🤬

So I headed down to the corner hardware to get a slightly larger o-ring. No luck with finding the one I wanted ... they don't have the correct thickness in stock ... 🤬

So I did settled for a couple that I thought might work (but ultimately didn't ... 🤬) Lady offered to go down into the basement cause she thought they might have a return that might have a returned sprayer that may have something I could use.

Ended up scoring what appeared to be a new complete sprayer for free, however she didn't know what the issue was or why it was returned ... only that the hardware store didn't need it and I could have it. Haven't tried it yet.

Tried the two o-rings when I got back, no dice ... still won't pump.

Tried swapping out the pump from The Woman's 1 gallon Greenwood sprayer. No luck there either ... apparently the high-acidity vinegar She was running in it attacked the o-ring swelling it, and the pump flapper valve causing it not to seal.

At that point I had had enough and gave up on the spraying for the day.

Put the shrub bucket on the Kubota and contented myself with digging out and splitting several clumps of day lilies on the north side of the garage.

Took those over to the northeast planting bed and started putting them in the ground around the lilac bush until it got dark. Still have 5 left to go:

Did not get hopper feeder refilled, tube feeders now empty ... so will probably go do that here in a little bit.

Woman did provide a couple of BLT's for a late lunch/early dinner ... (y)

Ended up polishing off a couple more ribs and some of those oven-baked potatoes and a couple of Mike's Hard Limes later after I came in ... also two pieces of homemade banana bread with a big glass of milk later for desert ...

Woman was out earlier weeding the flower bed, got overheated, came in and got a shower.

Think I may make a run down to Menards during this afternoon heat and pick up a couple of Chapin 1 gallon sprayers. Aside from the clogging issue (which was my fault) the one I have seems to be reliable ... at least so far ... 🤞

Trash night tonight.

Hope everyone is having a good Monday ... (y)

Afternoon all!
82 out now and time for me to hold the couch down to the floor. Started out early this morning running to the hardware store to replace a defective spray can I bought Saturday. From there I grabbed the chainsaw and finished cutting all the apple and walnut into bowl size pieces. Stacked it all on a pallet and brought it outback for the winter. Needs to dry for a year or so. While out there I grabbed the snow plow and brought it up to the garage to get it ready. Then I took the tractor out back and turned my mulch pile to mix it up. From there I jumped onto the mower and cut the whole yard. Final trim and cleanup will have to wait till tomorrow. Came in and spent an hour in the woodshop. Cleaned up the mess and got a bag of rubbish ready for disposal tomorrow. Now time for a refreshing shower and then out with friends for coffee.
Pillow will be welcome early!
Hope everyone stays safe and healthy!

Good Morning!!!! 69F @ 9:15AM. Mostly cloudy skies early, then partly cloudy this afternoon. High 78F. Winds S at 10 to 20 mph.
Yesterday's tropical storm passed harmlessly to the east of here. We got a little wind, some dark skies, and a rainbow in the distance. No precip at all.

Looks like today's 11AM launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base is postponed 'till 11PM. Or maybe as late as 2:30AM. Ugh.

We didn't feel the earthquake yesterday, but two folks that were visiting had their alarms go off on their cell phones. Guess I need to get hooked into the local emergency warning system.

Been super busy this past week unpacking, setting up the kitchen, laundry room, bathrooms, and cleaning out and rearranging all the junk left by the previous owner. There must be at least fifty cans of paint of various sizes and quantities of paint in the garage, with no indication of what got used where.

Also had my buddy over Saturday to cut the grass, and we figured out the sprinkler system. Four different controllers, more zones. Cut back a bit on the watering, found a leak in one of the drip lines. Fixing it is on the agenda for this afternoon.

We also cleaned the outdoor furniture with a brush and the garden hose. Rearranged the back patio to get more of it under the porch cover and out of the elements. Biggest was a six seat table, but in tipping it over to clean the spider webs out from underneath, I broke two of the tiles on top. They're 8"x8", so hopefully I can find something suitable at HD.

Then we tackled the roses out front that run next to the neighbor's driveway, which hadn't had any love in quite a long time. They were hanging over not just on the RV access path to my backyard, but the neighbor's drive. When Bruce the neighbor saw what we were up to he came out and showed his appreciation; real nice guy. So between the rose trimming and grass cutting, the place looks like responsible adults own it. I call it keeping up with the Jonses, something I haven't worried about for a good long time.

Sunday a couple of friends joined us for a leisurely (for them) lunch. I fired up the Santa Maria style BBQ with some of the wood stacked in the back of the yard. Had a heck of a time getting it going as it's been uncovered and hasn't dried very well. My friend's leaf blower helped a lot!. Fed the fire for a few hours in the morning, then slow cooked a good sized TriTip (what else?). I was surprised at how tender and flavorful it was with just a bit of salt, thyme, garlic powder, and chipotle powder rubbed on one side. Salad and watermellon rounded out the meal, and no one went away hungry. So far the dishwasher is holding up, but it's making some odd noises, as is the 'fridge. I guess that's what the home warranty is for. Kind of a special occaission, not only for a sort of hose warming, but for my other buddy who had recently undergone heart surgery for a leaky valve. Spent a week in the hospital, and really enjoyed the food!

This morning I got the last of the locks rekeyed. It's one of those lever armed ones on an outside door, also with the KwikSet KwikKey tumblers. Getting the levers off involved an Allen wrench, borrowed from my buddy, running the screws in instead of out, which was pretty counter intuitive. Then the tumbler was held in place in a manner unlike any of the others I've done, so it was YouTube university to the rescue. Was trying to stay home today, but I might take a look at what's needed to hook the ice maker in the 'fridge to the water line on the wall in back of it. I think it's 1/8" compression, but still need the details to get the right stuff. It would only be a fifteen minute walk to the hardware store, a novelty that hasn't quite worn off yet.

On the other hand, I might take a crack at diagnosing the microwave. The control panel is loose and the door latch isn't engaging, and I think that's why it won't start. Home warranty probably won't cover the repair unless I wait a few weeks to make the claim, and if it's something simple I can take care of myself, I might as well. Hard living without a microwave once you've become accustomed to one.

garageDoorTrack.jpg

One of the puzzles left behind by the former owner/contractor was this garage door track. It runs right down the middle of the starway, making it very easy to bang you head when you try to negotiate the stairs. I'm wondering if I can extend the axles for the wheels so I could mount the track on the wall. There would still be an issue with the garage door when it was up, but at least the track would be out of the way when the door was down. Any of you do anything like that before? It's either that, or shorten and steepen the stairway.

Hope everyone's Monday got off to a good start...

The axel for the wheels should be extended further towards the middle of the door and another hinge added to support it and then it can be extended towards the wall to the track relocated to the wall. Just my opinion. No experience with this

If you need the original instruction for the locks I can send them to you but it sounds like you have it figured out.

another $275 at costco for 19 items. ouch....

speaking of inflation, I compared 11 grocery and 8 household items frequently purchased from Costco for 2019, 2020 and 2023.
From 2019 to 2020, the total cost of all the items only increased $2.50. From 2020 to 2023 they have increased $52.91, or 23.1%. I'm assuming the same package size, but for the Tide, it decreased from 208 oz to 170 oz, so I show the equivalent price. I believe some of the other items have decreased in quantity also.
