Lake Superior Railroad Museum​

Currently tucked near the big train doors on Track #3 in the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, the tiny Minnetonka has over a century of train stories to share. It is 0-4-0 "tank" steam locomotive and was the first locomotive on the Northern Pacific. It arrived in Duluth MN in 1870 to haul track materials and supplies while track builders pushed westward.

On March 8, 1855 John Augustus Roebling traveled over his Niagara Suspension Bridge in a trial train crossing made by a 23 ton engine.

During the crossing the heavy train created only a minor 1 inch depression over an area of 100 feet on the bridge’s deck.

At that moment the bridge became the world’s first operational railway suspension bridge.

Roebling and as I recall his son engineered the Brooklyn Bridge. Pretty amazing old pic of that bridge.

BNSF operated a "snow coach" today from Superior to Kelly Lake (Hibbing MN) to deliver a crew for an ore train and pick up crews. The railroad operates these when their contract crew haulers pull their vehicles off the roads due to weather. Green 1943 was split from 1832 and a geep substituted, so this appears to be the Rapids power for the upcoming week. These images show the northbound light units rolling under the former DM&IR Alborn Branch (now a snowmobile trail). Gus went high and I went low. Alborn, MN - March 12, 2023
