Ron, if you want to drive on a parking lot around Toronto, try the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) at 5 P.M. on a snowy winter day. Either direction, doesn't matter.
After the 401 was completed it was outdated. At that time it was a 4 lane controlled access highway. Now in places around Toronto it is 12/13 lanes wide and still outdated.
Toronto has zero suburbs to the south, just east, west and north.
The best way to get from the east to the west end of Toronto is to hit the highway before 5 A.M. in Oshawa and stay in the core and pay real close attention to the overhead illuminated signs. My 'smart money' has always been to read the overheads and IF there is a lane closure, which in summer is all the time, then jump into the collectors one or two transfer lanes before the closure and pick the lane next to the hammer down lane (second lane from the left) and still pay attention to the signs. Unless I am in the big truck I always 'go with the flow', so at times you might be doing 80 + mph.
Back before the Commies (our Provincial Goobermint) made it law that trucks couldn't go over 105 km/h (65 mph) I could keep up with traffic. The truck I drive now has a hard time getting out of its' own way, but it will pull the world. 139,997 lbs (63,500 kgs) is what it is legal for.
You guys in the 'states that rely on GPS, don't do that up here. You are better with a printed map or a map book. GPS will send you down roads the wrong way to your destination.
