Yes sometimes advice is worth what you pay for it, including YouTube.
While that is true it doesn't excuse throwing rocks painted to look like floats to a person who is drowning. It sometimes requires a lot of thought just to sort harmful advice from that which is useful or worthless.

People are missing a key issue. Serialized parts. Apple is a big offender in this. You can troubleshoot and replace parts all you want, but if the manufacturer locks you out, so what. And then they wont sell components to fix their stuff. and they threaten suppliers if they get caught selling parts.

Louis Rossman on youtube has covered the right to repair and all the pieces of it in depth.
Wasn't there a supreme court ruling some time in the last 6 months or so that struck down Apple's monopoly on only selling parts or providing repairs thru their own stores? Didn't address some of the other proprietary-parts issues or RtR in general, but a step in the right direction.

When you say "serialized parts", are you referring to parts that must be programmed for the parent device's s/n? Lots of automotive modules need to be programmed with the VIN in order to work.

yea, Programmed to work. Its an issue because they are serializing things like screens. They also dont do repair and sell replacements when possible. charging port on your macbook bad? apple will sell you a 1500$ board for a $2 part on a $1100 laptop.

have you heard of HP tuners or EFI live? they pertain to the automotive world but illustrate my point. with either you can completely rework the operations of a automotive computer with ease and at that point it becomes as much programming as mech work.
BTW i'm an EE also.

yea, My truck was tuned with EFI live sadly and from what i was told, the easiest way to get it back to stock is to just buy a replacement computer.

If i had the code to my wifes van, i could fix some of the programming bugs in it. The HVAC randomly wont be in auto when displaying AUTO on start up. you have to toggle to manual and back to auto for the AC to run right.

It sure would be nice to be able to go in and turn off features you find annoying. A couple I'd get rid of in a heartbeat would be the door-open-key-in-ignition chime and the auto-up/down on the windows.
From what I gather from talking with dealer techs, this is easier said than done. It's not like you can go in and check/uncheck boxes to enable/disable features. Lot more complicated than that.

It is the same in the auto industry. A neighbor of mine who's a mechanic made the decision to close up shop due to the number of repairs that couldn't be completed without being activated by the dealer. I've heard (but can't confirm) that on some newer vehicles there are procedures that not even all dealers have the equipment/expertise to perform...most of which involve the self-driving gadgetry.

That is interesting and a very good point. If I had a repair shop OR dealership, I don't think I wouldn't want the accept the liability of working on self driving stuff.

I'm sure it's written in a high level language. Cant imagine it's all done in assembly.

But you would need to code and compiler and so on

A lot of the features are just that like the displacement on demand in my Tahoe it was just an option that I turned off by un checking a box in efi live but the software and interface is like 1000.00 unless you have a friend that has it

A new ecu is cheaper than efi live and a lisence.

I put about 3000 miles on my truck a year so I am not super motived to change it.
