Starlink

Interesting new issue with Starlink.

I was remotely connected to my SL system in CA, while it was experiencing moderate snow. Speed was unusually slow so I verified the "automatic" snow melt option was selected. It was, but shortly thereafter I lost all access.

I connected using the app and my system credentials for CA. But, it would not allow me to make any change to snow melt config. In fact, it wouldn't show that option at all in the app.

At this point, I don't know if my app was only talking to Starlink.com, or if it was actually getting to my dishy in CA or not. I am in bypass mode there, so, not sure how that figures into the mix.

I'm guessing I will reestablish connection tomorrow as the weather clears. It will be interesting to see if the snow melt part of the app "wakes up" once I can establish a connection again.

Inconclusive results about what might have happened. The slow speed I experienced prior to loss of contact was about 2mbps download, so something was definitely unusual. Maybe weather related slowdown?

There were intermittent power outages. So maybe my SL went down, letting the antenna accumulate snow?

When I was able to reconnect, the app again allowed control over the snow melt option. So I am guessing the app was not connected to my dishy during a power failure.

In Southern CA I also experienced data failure while playing a game online I lost connection to the server - checked my speed and it was under 10mbps on my PC wired to the router and my phone - situation resolved sometime later.

Is there any way I can check on the status of my starlink system remotely? I'm out of town and the wife at home is complaining of no internet.

Yes. Just open the app on your phone and it will connect. You can not run speed test remotely but you can see the status.

If your SL system has connectivity to the network you should be able to interface with it via the app (when your phone is connected via another method). If the SL system isn't connecting for some reason (i.e. obstruction, heavy snow/rain, power failure) then you won't be able to.

When in doubt, have her unplug the system from AC power, wait 30 sec, then plug it back in. Short of guiding her through installing the app and connecting to the system that's probably all that can be done.

Today marks the start of a new HughesNet billing cycle, and coincidently the start of StarLink Residential service six months ago. I'd been keeping HughesNet in reserve in case problems developed with Starlink, and so far at least Starlink is meeting all of my Internet needs. Now, after twenty-three minutes on the phone suffering through excuses and delays, I was able to cancel the HughesNet service. I just kept repeating "Please cancel my service" whenever another option was trotted out. The rep got the last word when she told me I could reactivate the service within 45 days with no charge. Yeah, when pigs fly...

I can't connect to my system via the Starlink app, so I suspect it is not powered up, weather/obstruction is not a factor.
My starlink system is plugged into a battery backup supply. The GFCI outlet that the battery backup is plugged into, tripped and shut off power to the system. Apparently the battery in the backup was pulled low and the backup system shut down. She reset the GFCI outlet and says the battery backup is now up and running. But she didn't check to see if the backup actually has an output, or if the fiberoptic controller has power or if the starlink router has power. Guess I will see if I can talk her thru those things tomorrow as it is too dark at this point for her to be messing with the system.
This is the second time in 3 months the GFCI has tripped, for no apparent reason. It might be time to replace it with a standard outlet.

GFCI is a fickle thing. I avoid plugging anything vital into one of those circuits.

Can't the wife just run an extension cord and plug the controller into a known good non-GFCI outlet somewhere? Seems like a quick fix.

Dishy is mounted to the furthest out pole on our 100' dock. Only place to get no obstructions. Starlink router is sitting in a box with battery backup, starlink router, starlink ethernet port adaptor and fiberoptic adaptor about 120' from dishy. Nearest outlet is the GFCI one at the shore end of the dock. Box with everything in it is over 150' from the house, which is one reason why I am using fiber to get the internet signal into the house. Our house has aluminum siding so wifi signal doesn't get in or out of the house. I don't know if we have enough extension cords to get power from the house out to the box.
