Now I’m really starting from the topic. Yet I have refused to sell a truck because the potential buyer didn’t understand that just because he could drive it home didn’t mean it wouldn’t need TLC.

I tried selling my Toyota V6 with 214k on it. Dealt with a lot of yahoos on marketplace facebook. Finally one guy seemed normal, and I told him I would have a mechanic go over it top to bottom because it was just a beater truck for me at my point in life.

I did take it to the mechanic. Ended up having a head gasket replaced with motors for the windows because I still gave it the chance this guy was a whack job, just hand't seen it yet (after dealing with 8 idiots, this guy I made up my mind was my last chance).

THEN the guy tells me he has to check with his bank to see if he can buy it. Who the &*$% needs to go to a bank to buy a $3,500 truck?

Now I just tell my wife our used truck is cheaper than a RTV or whatever you call the $15,000 2/4 seater for hauling stuff around the house.

Point being, when you deal with people on a internet forum where they don't have to "join" and they don't have some skin in the game and be accountable for their actions, you really do have a lot of idiots in the general public.

That said, have come across some sane people on facebook. Far and few in between though.

On a side note, sincere thanks for Eddie for starting this thread (although the circumstances suck, I understand).

We ended up checking our paperwork hidden in the safe. My wife thought we had a trust, we did not, simple wills along with power of attorney.

We ended up getting a new lawyer for the trust as the original lawyer has since died who wrote up our wills.

Reality is we really needed a lot of things updated.

I can be a big procrastinator at times on certain things, and the reality is spending money on a lawyer is never high on my "to do list". Glad I did, in part due to this thread.

If you haven't revisited what you have on file in years, suggest you do so. We need to take my FIL off and add my MIL as my FIL died last year as well as some other changes due to time.

Like this new lawyer. His only point to me is you want to keep EVERYTHING per assets out of probate.

Apologies for keep this thread alive, but my wife just got back from her mothers (only an hour away) spending two nights with her, and we had a conversation this morning on our walk.

Seems my Aunt (my wife's mother's sister) asked my wife to be her executor of their will/estate.

This aunt has two grown men, and neither wanted to discuss anything with their mother (when their mother brought the subject up of someone being a "executor") of what would happen with anything if she dies (this aunt just turned 75) and she realizes both her and her husband won't be around forever.

That said, if a love one wants to talk to you about planning about the future possibility of their death, hiding you head in the sand will accomplish nothing and you aren't helping the person that wants to talk with you as a loved one.

I'm kind of honored that my aunt would want my wife as the only person she would want as her executor if her sons don't want to talk about it, but my fear is my wife is in a lot of potential future headache with my cousins or her "uncle in laws" family.

This is crap that we don't normally think about...

Sorry Eddie, you kind of opened the can of worms up on this subject, but in the end, I think it can be for a good thing.

We talked about that. My wife's aunt doesn't even have a trust.

Keep in mind, my wife doesn't come into play if her (aunt) husband is still alive when she dies (husband is good guy IMO, she met him when he was a jarhead and he's level headed).

My comment to my wife (on our walk) is when we talk to our new "estate / trust" lawyer in person, to ask him about her aunts request.

What I find amazing is her (my wife's aunt) own sons don't want to talk about what happens when she dies. Reality is we are all going to die sooner or later..

My wife's brother won't talk about their mom's eventual passing. He wouldn't talk about his dad's personal affairs before he passed 2 years ago either. Some folks just can't do it. He thanked my wife and me for taking care of things for his mom. He meant it. I was happy to do it for the family.

Did you ever resolve the gun safe dilemma?

Not yet. I have it in my new garage addition, but it's not secure in there yet. I need a long weekend to finish tying the new roof into the old roof where I'm positive it's not going to rain when I cut the exiting roof and remove it. I also have to do this when I'm done with one job, and before starting the next one. This time of the year, it's been a challenge with all the rain we've been getting.

I've been watching YouTube vidoes and I believe that I can drill a hole through the safe door, just below the hole where the wires go through it that will be covered by the combination thingy. If that works, I can salvage the safe by filling the hole and covering it with the combination thingy. If not, I'll destroy the door with my grinder and open it that way. From everything that I've learned about Cannon Safes, it's not really something that I would buy if I was out buying a safe to keep my stuff secure.

I just don't want it opened until I can close up the garage. Once the roof is on, I'll install the garage door, and feel better about opening the safe.

I've owned a cannon safe, and I would agree with your assessment.

I might of missed it, but did you call a locksmith? Mine was no problem when I had issues with the digital lock.

Worst case, a cannon is good from the smash and grab crackheads looking for a quick easy score.

But a locksmith might be able to talk to Cannon Safes as to how to remove existing lockset without destroying the door. My neice's husband has done it with Browning Safes. He is out of southern Michigan, though. Jon

Although mine was done about 17 years ago, it was no more than $50 and done in about 10 minutes (local guy in town). The guy spent more time showing me the inside safe door when it was apart showing my why they are cheap Heck, no drill needed.

Assuming it's big enough to hold some things of semi value, it would be worth it IMO than to destroy the door and not be able to use it. Heck, for what the locksmith "might" cost (assuming pushing $100) I'd think you'd be able to sell it for at least $200, make $100 and have someone take it off your hands.

I believe once you get the lock opened, you can then reset it. Could be wrong on that, something else to consider.

Yes, they are not the greatest safes in the world, but they'll keep kids and stupid thief's out.

You can into the laptop drive by removing it and adding it as an auxilliary drive on another computer. I had to do this for m BIL to get stock & bond lists, photos, etc.
It saddens me whenever someone goes thru this, especially you Eddie, you're a cornerstone of this forum! My heart stopped for a few minutes a month ago from dehtdration + cardiomyopathy from the Modern shot (I was told). But, I was brought back with some Hydration Multiplier. Since then I've been thorough about what is where, passwords, and who gets what.
