I haven't read all the pages here, and I'm not a doctor. That said, there is plenty of evidence that eating a keto or carnivore diet can actually cure a type 2 diabetic if that way of eating is maintained. I'm not looking to argue here; if your opinion differs that's fine. But I practice what I preach, and I am doing much better than I was.

The only thing I am genetically predisposed to is diabetes, and I don't want diabetes. I am 53 and in excellent physical condition, but my a1c was 5.6 at my last bloodwork. I started eating in a ketogenic fashion about 8 months ago and my a1c has been reduced, I've lost a few pounds (I'm already reasonably lean), no longer suffer from gout or diverticulitis, fewer aches and pains, lowered my blood pressure, and generally feel better. My wife has been eating carnivore for about 9 months. She has lost 40lbs, no longer has asthma, no longer has to use nsaids for joint pain and generally feels much better.

People will bring up the "issue" of cholesterol. Do your own research. IMO, we've been sold a false bill of goods on that topic. If your doctor refers to there being 2 different kinds of cholesterol, he/she doesn't know what they're talking about. Pharma stands to make a lot of money, and have been, by keeping people sick and taking "meds" to treat them rather than curing them through a change in eating.

I’m suppose to change my lifestyle and eating habits for better health? Blasphemy! Just give me a pill or a shot and pass the donuts! This is Murica, I’m free to eat what I want!

Cody, that made me chuckle...as my primary doc gave me the same choice this morning. Cut way back on carbs and lose 20 pounds, or he would give an injection weekly that would
make my prediabetes go away. No. I see shots as last resort. But clearly lots of folks choose the shots, maybe not enough will power to give up pizzas.
Pizzas are a wonderful example btw. Just loaded with carbs, fat grams and salt. Pizza is utterly yummy.

So I've stopped eating pizza. And cut way way back on ice cream. But bread? 15 grain or high fiber bread?
Going to keep eating some of that. Maybe I should kick my baking into high gear and make my own low carb bread.
Or bread that doesn't turn into sugar so quickly.
Home made pizzas aren't hard to make and you can be sure of the ingredients then. Not some mystery meat.

Crispy Creme donuts. I think each one takes a month off your life. that thick white sugary glaze, which winds up on your
fingers too. I personally don't like them at all, good thing, but have been known to lust after a double chocolate Entemans donut.
More cake, less sugar. But then the cake turns almost instantly to sugar anyway. And your glucose alarm goes ding ding ding.

I thought my AIC was 5.7. No. 5.9
pre-diabetes starts at 5.5.

cholesterol all in range, often in middle.
too bad they don't color code it as to the good cholesterol and the bad cholesterol.
no cholesterol? you likely aren't breathing
I cheat and only take my statins half the time. Issues with cramping during summer. Should start taking them every day now.

I'm 30 pounds overweight, shaped like a lean pear, and have beaten back cancer. Lots of risk factors.
Have worked hard to eat "better". Just can't get to liking kale...
Too bad a cheesburger with a tomato and onion didn't satisfy all the requirements...

bottom line is most of us ate our way into this and thankfully most of us can eat our way out.

This is for Buppies who early on gave me the best advice of all
In your case Drew lose some weight

My last wife was a heavy eater and loved to cook. We were both fairly large people, though I was always at least 50
pounds heaver than she was. Large portions, lots of appetizers, lot of fried food. You get used to eating that way and I think your
body remembers, it just wants more. And more. I found this picture of me sitting on the flybridge on my Bertram 20 years ago surrounded by
the typical smorgasbord my wife put out, particularly if we had company. I ballooned up to 265 in this picture. Wife and I didn't have kids so
we could focus on adult food. And we ate well. Too well.

Now I'm 40 pounds lighter but that last 25 has always shown I have inadequate will power I guess.
But....always said I wanted to be a little fat and very happy.
I succeeded at that, thinking that a tire around the middle while otherwise totally healthy was ok. Not any more.
Not after cancer. Not after dinging the bell for pre-diabetes.

Buppies, you are absolutely right.
Doc told me that today also.
Reminded me to stay more physically active.
Most exercise really makes me hurt after too short a time.
maybe I'll kick my feet more in the hot tub...

@daugen Calisthenics, stretching, call it what you want, but Yoga to be exact.
Simple and a 10 minute investment.

There is NO cure for diabetes! There's only controlling it, you can get to a point where you need minimal/no meds, but you won't be cured.

I was "pre diabetic" for years, then.... they put me on their pills, a very low dosage according to the pharmacist.
Went back in for bloodwork after 6-8 weeks and the numbers were worse. I told them why in the world would I want more of that chit as it's the only difference? They asked me if I wanted to talk with a nutritionist and I (luckily) was able to just walk down the hall to a different office. I was completely ignorant of carbs prior to taking with her. How could bread, taters and pasta be bad for you was just not in my thinking. She started our meeting with with what did you have for breakfast? It happened to be a pulled pork sammich from a butt I had smoked over the weekend. I was sure she was going to take my head off but instead she said "good, the fat in the pork helped to metabolize the sugars in the bread" a few words that I'll never forget.
So now a carb watcher I'm looking at bread in the grocery store (I'm a sandwich guy) and discovered that cheapo English muffins were about 22 carbs so this became my bread. This also inadvertently was portion control.
Now I am conscious of pasta and potatoes, use stevia in the morning for coffee, but I haven't taken their pills for 3+ years and it's pretty much a free for all with meat.👍
About 40 pounds have disappeared over this time as well.

You are right, at that point the pancreas will never function like it used to, but if a person doesn't have to take meds/injections for it and their blood sugar is within normal, healthy range as long as they eat correctly, they are as "cured" as they are going to be. Much better, imo, than relying on a daily shot or two so I can continue eating the garbage food that most supermarkets are chock full of. And, will probably extend that person's life, and allow them to enjoy the benefits of overall better health, too.
