The phrase is "regenerative braking" and all electric vehicles and hybrids do it to recharge the battery when slowing down or braking. For most cars, it captures 90% of the energy.
How has the, for lack of a better term driveability of vehicles with regenerative braking improved over the last 15 years or so? Back in the mid 00's, took a drive in SIL's pruis and I found the braking to be weird. Not grabby per se, but not smooth either. Hard to adjust to. Granted, this was 15 years ago when hybrids were still kind of a novelty, I'd imagine that's been improved.

Regenerative braking. Never heard the term but, yeah, that is kind of where I was going with it. Thanks!

The term regenerative braking is slightly misleading...there is no real
braking (in the friction sense of the word)...it's all done with the electric motors...

They may have improved, but it could also just getting used to it. Both of our hybrids (one is a Prius) have two modes for regenerative braking. One is "light" and the other is close to one pedal driving, as you ease off on the gas pedal, the braking starts. I always drive in the one pedal mode. Like any driving skill, some folks are smoother than others. I have been driven by some folks who definitely are head snappers accelerating and decelerating. After decades of trailering animals, I tend to be in the "plan ahead", gently accelerate/decelerate, and turn slowly, driving mode. My spouse is more of the Mario Andretti driving style, and fortunately has the reflexes for it. Did I mention that I do all the trailering in the family?:oops::)

All the best,

Peter

One of the local cities will pay residents to install a curbside charger. It has a separate billing setup, so anyone can use the charger.

When you don't own an electric vehicle, I think that there is a reasonable concern about range anxiety, and charging. After you own one, you realize that for most people most of the time, it isn't an issue. I'm not saying that electric cars are for everyone right now, but at the same time, for most people it would work just fine. I have a plug in hybrid that, for me, 90% of the time gets by on its 35 mile range battery.

Peter thanks for this posting. Being 71 today I know how hard grasping hybrid and battery only EVs had been for me. It was October 2019 when I learned Mercedes Benz of Norway had a $22 million USD shortfall in sales because of customers trading to EVs.

This was the first time that I understood the move to ev's was actually a reality in process or progress. I drove the F-150 to St Louis Missouri 200 miles and ball a 3-year-old Nissan Leaf SL with a dying battery for $13,500 which I considered a crazy move financially but a necessity if I was going to learn about this to help with other family members to move from the old technology. Nissan came through with a new battery and then the car got totaled due to a guy running a red light. Rebuilding it lead to buying another Leaf for parts and getting it back on the road was a chore with everything that was going on health wise in the world.

Last month I overpaid for a 2015 Prius C so I could get a handle on hybrid technology. Someone as dense as I am has to put their money or the banks money where their mouth is to really bear down on and learn the nitty gritty in and outs of EV ownership.

You are welcome! I am partial to the learn by doing myself, though I try hard to learn from others! I am glad that the red light runner didn't get you. My wife had a Prius totaled due to a red light runner. She was going 50mph and was T-boned with only minor injuries. We bought the replacement Prius two days later. Several of her coworkers passed the crash on their way homes and they all assumed that the driver had died in the accident. We have always been willing to pay a premium for a crash safe vehicle.

When we first got the Prius, I got deep into it trying to see if I could make a vehicle to home UPS out of it and decided I could, though for the price, I decided I could do some other solution. (We ended up putting AC coupled batteries on the house instead, which also got rid of some fifty year old electrical breakers and panels.)

A relative recently got a similar vintage Prius; these days it is a hot market for Prius cars, so I would not be too sure that you "overpaid". Gas is $5/gal out here, and a car that can average 50mpg gets pretty attractive to many folks, though an electric vehicle that has 20% of the running costs gets even more attractive...

Stay safe out there.

All the best,

Peter

This makes me think of semi tractors and their ‘jake brakes’. Loud and obnoxious form of engine braking when the truck driver makes the effort. I’ve had an old truck passing the house hourly for a week now hauling peanuts from nearby fields. Blabbllbl.

I was surprised when I went down the E CVT Toyota hybrid transmission rabbit hole that is how that works when B mode is selected.

The computer cuts ignition and fuel and MG1 spins up the engine for engine braking force.

B mode in the Leaf just causes heavier Regen and charges the HV battery at a faster rate

I've heard the Blabblbl and suspected it was a jake brake. Thanks for confirming it.

A lot of that is the driver, listening to his engine. Many short haul trucks are running straight pipes or close to it. Often the driver will just keep blipping the throttle, rather than just using it to help control the speed. Not the way it's meant to be used, and guys like him give all drivers a bad rap.
