I mean, we all learned from your garage build thread that you have your own particular building preferences, lol.

But this is kinda silly, man. You friend's disaster example only informed us that they did a **** job on the stucco and didn't waterproof the wall assembly. Its not like if you had sh!tty stucco leaking water into a plywood sheathed wall, that this would somehow be fine or desireable in comparison.

OSB isn't really any heavier than plywood. 7/16 sheets are easy to toss around. It cuts easily and doesn't delaminate like plywood layers can. Keep your OSB in the roof and walls dry, like it always should be, and it lasts forever. And saves you a ton of cash while building.

I'd rather use plywood most of the time also, but not for twice the price.
Use doug fir plywood. No delamination like cheaper yellow pine. Yellow pine starts delaminating if you spit on it.

$170 to build this new 72x36 workbench for the new shop. Just needs a couple coats of shellac!

I have emptied my haul of reclaimed 2X4s from over the years. Glad I collected all those crappy boards. I still have a nice supply of 2X6's
and yesterday was eyeballing prices just under 5 and 6 dollars for studs.

Still double from what I recall paying a long while ago.

A year ago we were paying about $9/stud and $50/sheet of BC plywood… AC today is $45.

2x4x8 studs holding at $4.35 here. Anyone else find it funny that (at least at home depot) the 92-5/8 and 96" studs are always the exact same price? I'll take the 3 free inches every time, lol.

^^^ When you're only doing a few, cutting them doesn't involve a lot labor. When you're doing a building, that 3" inches can save a considerable amount of time and at today's labor costs, that can add up significantly.

Yup....that 3" isn't free. It actually cost you money if you are actually building a stud wall. More labor, note time, and more waste to get rid of.

Blasphemy! It ain’t waste, it’s 3 or 4 nice pieces of kiln-dried kindling for my wood stove. Yes, I typically actually spend even more time to cut those extra 3 inches off not once, but thrice. Or often when the project is over i just cut up all the untreated wood into little strips.

New construction plummeted in July, further depleting housing supply

thehill.com.ico

Construction activity for new U.S. homes decreased sharply in July, and the number of permits issued for new building projects also fell as higher mortgage rates and supply chain problems ...

There's been a lot of discussion about starts being months into the future and people not even being able to get start dates. We don't want the contractors suffering and having to lay workers off, but will this allow them to catch up some? Will it bring lumber and other materials (electrical, plumbing, etc) prices down to where homeowners can buy stuff again for small projects? I haven't bought much of anything along that line in a year.

A slowdown might be good to an extent if it doesn't cause other problems.

So, prices should drop even further if demand goes down...

Around here, contractors are booked out at least a year, there just isn't enough people to go around. They're still plowing ahead with new construction, BUT they're ALL high density apartments and town homes. It's sick, and i hate it, I don't understand why anyone would want to live there. But they sell at record speed, typically sight unseen, before they're finished. Imagine living your whole life inside 4 walls without a yard around all these other people.
