Red-bellied woodpecker.

I was blessed with nice cloud cover today. Best time to photograph wildlife is a bright overcast day. Clouds act like natures lampshade and distribute the light in an even and soft way.

Not the best photos, but ok for towing though glass at a pretty extreme angle.

Four or five years ago, I got to see a pit get born out in the back yard.

I always hope when they come through they will munch on some California sea lions. So far, no such luck. 😤

I’ve only seen a few in my life. They aren’t common around here. People often mistake cormorants swimming for loons here.

We have loons and cormorants. In general, the loons we have are more colorful and not easily confused with the cormorants which the dominant one here (Pelagic) is mostly black.

Last week I saw two large V’s of cormorants flying over. I’d guess well over 100 between the two V’s, which were about 100 yards apart. Kinda neat seeing them sitting in groups drying off on branches by the lakes.

We have black ones here, not sure of the name, and up on Lake Michigan, there are some huge greyish one’s. Never seen those before. We saw them sitting on security fence pilings that stretch out into Lake Michigan next to a nuclear plant. Hmmmm….. maybe that’s why they are huge and grey! :ROFLMAO:

I like the loon calls also... always has been one of my favorite waterfowl... these pics are a few years old now but every summer we get multiple pics of them when we are in Maine...
