Starlink

Well Dishy finally arrived, a full week after the estimated delivery date. Unfortunately, the roof mount, ethernet adapter and extended cable are now backordered until 4/25.

The roof is the only spot I can place the dish and I only want to make one trip up there. Since the mount is backordered, I got this one from Amazon to use as a permanent solution:

I can confirm that it fits the new Gen 2 square dish and allows the cable to be placed inside the tube, just like the OEM mount. It also mounts to the roof with 6 lag screws instead of just 2 for the OEM pivot mount.

I used this clamp to hold the dish & mount together:

It appears the 75' cable will work so I can do a permanent installation without the backordered parts. I will test the location before drilling any holes. All I need now is for the weather to clear.
Thanks for the confirmation. I'll order these parts because I used the mount from my now canceled DirecTV dish and it's very loose.

If you’re not aware, the Dish itself will do a scan of the sky to look for obstructions after it is set up and running. See below. According to the app it takes 12 hours.

Good luck with your install and may the equipment be trouble-free. Mine pretty much crapped out after 3 weeks and they sent a replacement. (Both Gen 2) I’m in south Georgia and the dish points due north at about 60 degrees above the horizon.

Thanks!

Others have mentioned premature equipment failure as well. It's advisable not to throw out the shipping container just in case.

do you have a picture and calipers? i could prolly design a 3d printed part to fix it, if its simple for a fee.

These new rectangular dishes seem to have a lot more problems than the early round ones. I wasn't hearing nearly the amount of chatter about failures and needing support assistance from March through maybe November-ish, but since December it is jumped way up. That's a bummer for all involved.

The mount I mentioned above is also a slightly loose fit for the Starlink dish post. I put a wrap of friction tape on it before clamping the two pieces together.

The installation instructions say that the dish articulates automatically to seek the best alignment. It isn't clear if this is a one time event during setup or does it realign itself every so often?

If so, the moving parts could become a maintenance issue as they wear over time. Another possible failure point perhaps?

My Dish’s position seems pretty stable and fixed. A reboot or maybe a power outage will cause it run through its setup & search routine. And yes I would hold onto the box and packaging for a good while. The return process is simple via FedEx with an emailed shipping label.

Observationally, it appears to be something it does on initial power up and then for a few times over the first hours of operation, and then again after power interruptions.

In principle, it should be tied solely to adjusting for the mounting angles to best orient the antenna toward maximal satellite density.

All the best,

Peter

There are a lot more square dishys rolling out a lot faster than the old round ones. So even if they had the same defective rate, you'd hear about more issues. Also people tend to get on the Internet to complain loudly about any issues. But they don't go out of their way nearly as much ifcthings work.

The new cheaper to manufacture dishys could definitely be less robust. But listening to chatter without knowing shipping rates or defect rates can give a misleading picture.
