Cool Or Creepy Things Found In The Bush Or On Your Property

Thought there might be some stories to tell and pics to show.

I don't have a picture but here's my first contribution.

Deer hunting. Standing on the edge of a sort of meadow I see something under a juniper bush not far away.
I take a look and it stopped me in my tracks.
Under the bush there was a baby blanket with "something" wrapped in it.
I didn't know whether to call police or take a look for myself. I didn't want to contaminate a possible crime scene
but I also didn't want to draw police out for something silly or nothing at all.
I decided to note where I walked/stood, and gently pulled back an edge of the blanket.

It was a teddy bear wrapped up.
Thank God, but still a darned creepy thing to find in the bush.

At my local shooting range, in the center of the property which is all trees, there were remains of an old 1930s truck.
Well beyond restoration. Unrecognizable really.
I asked the landowner who would have left that there. He knew it was there but couldn't guess who left it.
His family has owned the property for generations.

Our first home was built right after WWII. After we moved in, I started a garden. I dug up a metal soldier, about 4 inches high. It was in WWI uniform, and it looks to be cast iron. I also dug up a set of eye glass frames, that appeared to be very old.

I recalling telling my Dad about this, and he said "Well, I can remember when that area was the city land fill. They just bulldozed it flat and built all of those houses on it.

My 80 acres is part of an old 360 acre federal land grant. Much like a homestead. Granted to the homesteader is 1892. He never had electricity here. Amongst the old buildings - barn & chicken coops - I found several wooden boxes of old dry cell batteries. The old man and his wife must have had a radio of some type.

When we bought our house, there was an old metal shed the po used to store firewood in, was probably 1/4 full, I didn't like it, but used the wood, and started to tear it down, in the corner was a cat skeleton, poor guy was probably sleeping in there and got conked on the head, when they were stocking.

I've come across a fair amount of interesting things while out in the woods... always when I didn't have a camera. One hot summer's day while cruising timber outside of Gorham NH I came across the remains of an old flume, which they apparently used to slide logs down the mountain. On a cold, windy, bitter January day I was walking down a hill and noticed a hemlock tree had been completely stripped of it's branches. as I neared I saw two bears laying on a bed of boughs in the snow with tail to nose, nose to tail and the tree between them. It looked like a big bear donut with a tree growing between them.

Yet another time, working one rainy day when I came across what I first thought was an underground bunker. There was a hole just big enough for somebody to squeeze through, and although it was dark there appeared to be a bed or something inside. Upon closer examination I discovered that I was in a small gravel "borrow" pit and was looking through the windshield frame of an old service truck. It had been pushed off to the side, then partially covered with the tailings from the pit. What I thought was a bed was actually the truck seat.

We found a maple vat from an old mapling house,
Blue glass from a small glass blower
The old CC camp foundations.
All pretty close (<mile) from my uncles house in MA.
The Mapling house was about 200' into the woods.

The blue glass "factory" not far away from the mapling house.

The CC camp off in the woods (state park) . Mostly stone base, but some walls still standing, this was back many years ago when I was a kid.

We found many old abandoned houses in the woods back in the state forest.

Old cars chassis here and there too.

Have not found much on my property, just old stone wall, old tree stand, old 2stroke muffler. Nothing too fun.

Found some used condoms back in the woods out behind the house in the grass. I certainly hope whoever used them didn't get ate up by the skeeters back there....lol Guess you cannot put a price on fun....

Back when Loring Air Force was still a base in northern Maine, we found the cargo door to a plane out in the woods. More recently (20 years ago, +-) I was on my cruise line when I started seeing hardware hanging from the trees; wires with electrical connections and bolts still attached. Then I found 1/2 of a bomb!
Being the nosy type I had to check it out... in hindsight, not a wise thing to do. I looked it over, recording the numbers on the side in case I found somewhere to report it; and had to pick it up so that I could see the entire number.
Suddenly I heard tick,

Of course it was a hollow shell, there must have been a bolt in there which rolled down the fuselage.

A coworker once found an unopened parachute next to a pile of bones...

Back about 10 years, a prostitute run up to my tractor early one Saturday morning in a farm field. Her clothes were ripped and she was clearly beaten. She told me 2 guys picked her up in Philly and dumped her in my little hometown 25 miles away.
I called the police for her and they came and got her. Chief called me later that day and told me she was given a ride back to Philly.
Broke my heart to see the abuse this poor woman endured, then dumped in a field like that.
Hugged my daughter as I always do that evening before I put my kids to bed. I kept thinking that poor woman is someone’s daughter, sister, or mother.

A few days after we moved to our new place one of our horses came wandering ddown to the house with a spear in her neck, no idea where it came from and spent a couple of weeks going over evry square foot of ground, never found anything, we have a dam but the horses do not go into that paddock, it was a single barbed spike on a broken off wooden pole, vet came and removed the spear from her neck and some money from my wallet.

In the late 60's I found a pair of drop tanks from the wings off of a P-51 Mustang when out deer hunting in a very remote portion of southern AZ. They looked like they had been there a long time, no paint left on them, but were in surprisingly good condition.

Not quite 20 years later while on a deployment in southern N.M., we found an old abandoned missile launch site and found a way down into it. We were exploring around while off duty and it was pretty cool at the time. CO was worried about critters taking up residence in there, so told us to stop messing around in it.

While passing through White Sands Missile Range we found some old shot up targets, armored vehicles and trucks. We also found the original nuke test site, which was fenced off by then, but they had the old containment pipe sitting outside the fence. The containment pipe was massively thick steel pipe that was supposed to sit around the outside of the bomb and contain the nuclear material if the bomb went off but nuclear reaction didn't occur. They wanted to be able to save the nuclear material and reuse it if the bomb didn't work. In the end they decided not to use the containment pipe at all, thinking that it would skew the results of the test and limit the blast radius if the bomb did in fact go nuclear (it did).

Easy for some of us to make fun of. Then you see the human tragedy up close and it changes you.

Yeah, that's disturbing. About 35 years ago my wife and I were driving along and saw a naked woman screaming and crying while running down the shoulder of the road towards us. Fortunately, a cop was right in front of us and was already out of his car and put his coat around her. Very disturbing.

Now we're getting into the macabre. About 40 years ago I was sitting at a red light when I noticed a woman walking rapidly down the sidewalk who kept looking over her shoulder at a guy who was following her. About that time a town PD cruiser pulled up across from me and noticing the same, went through the light and also started following her. For some reason that has always stuck with me and I've gone over and over it in my head. Had the cop not shown up I hope that I would have pulled up beside her and offered a ride to the police station.

It's funny how much cell phones have changed things.

Not in the woods, but I used to work with a girl who found a shoe on the beach at Lake Michigan back in the early 70s. There was a human foot in it.

I also was friends with a guy that was building a 68 charger out of 2 wrecks in high school. He found a human foot under the dash of one of them.

Back to the woods...

I've found a lot of RR stuff like spikes and plates and small pieces of rail laying in our woods along the old RR grade.

Tilling our garden I felt a THUNK and found a cool little hatchet/hammer/nail puller thingy. If I remember, I'll take a picture of it tomorrow.

I also found a really tine blue bottle in the dirt in the garden. It's only about 1.5-1.7" tall. I've never seen another one like it and we frequent a LOT of antique/junk/flee market type places.

I found a big chunk of coal out in the woods years ago. I had to look at my GPS to see that there was a road there at one time, the coal was most likely for a Lombard Log hauler.

Wasn't there a few feet in and out of shoes washed up on the shore of Washington State and British Columbia?? A weird phenomenon for sure.
Wouldn't be surprised at a shoe in a car wreck I guess.
