I have a John Deere 1070, when in range 3 and I go to put it in reverse it will push the range shifter back to the center position. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Maybe the tractor engineers thought 3rd range was too high gear ratio for reversing. Have you consulted a 1070 operator's manual?

I used to have a JD1070 as well and it did the same thing. It would not allow reverse in high range. I always thought it was a safety thing as well like Tx Jim mentioned. Although, my MX4700 does allow reverse in high range and is a newer tractor. Not sure how that equates when things seem to be going more towards safety now than before..??

I really liked that tractor!! I sometimes wish I had kept it but then I would have to maintain two tractors.. I hope you enjoy yours!!!

Have not noticed that on my JD 4300, but then doubt I've tried reverse in high range.. will give it a try.
Other than road travel, do not overtax the tranny by using high range.

I had a 4200, it was possible.
We're talking compact series here, right?

Thans for all the comments. This is what I have found out about the transmission, (Linkage lockout removed starting with 1991 Model Year to allow 3rd Reverse). So the years 1989 and 1990 did not have a reverse in the 3rd range.
