Queen Mum is sick

I once watched the Netflix series The Crown. It’s based on the history of the royal family from the mid 1930’s to about 1990 so far, with the Queen being the central figure. Some interesting history there, or at least the show’s take on it. She never wanted to be queen as her father before her never wanted to be king. Portrayed as a burden.
The monarchy is like a carbon tax. Nobody can tell you what it really does for you, it's results are questionable at best, and it only makes the people collecting the taxes feel happy because it gives them a job.

All of the pomp and circumstance is cheap entertainment for the subjects.

That's our American perspective. The tiny island nation of Britain had an empire that covered three quarters of the planet. They still enjoy the respect of the countries they once ruled. Their pomp and circumstance is symbolic of that majesty inherent in the British culture and so eloquently channeled by their monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

And what have we got?
We're stuck with you.

The Queen Mum is not the reigning Queen. That would be the mother of the king or queen. More specifically, the widow of the previous monarch and mother of the current one.
