This has proved to be a problem with medical, surgical, lab and even Covid testing.

cant blame people for not answering but also risk of delay or missing out.

Just last week a patient set for discharge with his sister picking him up was a no show for 5.5 hours…

Hospital logged 5 calls but always to voice mail and due to confidentiality only limited info is often all that can be left.

Sister called in to check on brother and that was how patient able to go home…

For some reason she was expecting the call to be the main Hospital number and not one of the dozen dedicated outgoing lines with a different prefix…

Life in the modern world where comforts become burdens…

Most patients now days have a cell phone unless elderly or dementia.

We get calls or texts from relatives saying come get me, they are discharging me soon, way before we get the calls from the hospital.

I also don’t answer calls unless I recognize the number. Last fall while waiting for surgery I made an exception, which turned out to be their office calling to confirm my appointment. Apparently they can’t show their real number for “confidentiality reasons”... huh?

with the number of times I have been in the hospital they have never been the one to call my wife to tell her I am getting cut lose. It has always been me to call or text her.

Our nurses call 30 minutes before ready for discharge for out patient and morning of for in patient.

Never has an out patient called before nurse called... most do not bring cell with them but if they do it is in patient locker...

People not answering the phone is a daily problem.

I'm not involved with the MRI PET imaging Center but at 5 am this morning the tech called in sick with no replacement...

All morning patients arrived only to be told appointment cancelled... some diving 60+ miles for nothing.

I heard the scheduler break the news... to each one she said I called you at 5:10 or 5:19, etc to cancel and down to the last one each pulled out their phone and said oh that was you.... I don't answer if I don't know the number!

When my wife has gone for outpatient surgery, I've always been in the waiting room reading a book. The most I've done is gone down to the food court for some lunch. But I've usually had a pretty good idea as far as how long the procedure will last. So I would make sure I was back in the waiting room in plenty of time for updates.

The hospital my wife has had surgery in had a sign board listing updates for surgeries. Each patient is issued a number for privacy. So family members can look at the board and tell if their loved one is in surgery, prep, recovery, ect.....

Therein is the problem... waiting rooms closed almost two years now...

I answer. Couple months ago got the call she would be coming out in 5 minutes. I moved my vehicle to the door. 45 minutes later they brought her out.

I was in the hospital for 2 minor surgeries, which required overnight stays... and I had to have somebody drive me home. The first time they said somebody would have to walk me out, and since I didn't have the required mask I waited. And waited. Finally I went out into the hall and found somebody who quickly got me something to wear, then walked me out to where my sister was waiting.
The second time the nurse let me walk out myself, so I went out to my truck and sent a text to my sister telling her where I was. I could easily have driven home both times, but didn't want to assume the liability of getting in an accident.

After pituitary brain surgery, they kept me overnight before kicking me loose. Wife picked me up and we spent the night at a hotel. The next morning, I drove the 130 miles home. I thought my doctors were going to have strokes when they found out I drove home. It wasn't the surgery but the fact that I was under anesthesia for that. They could have told me not to be driving.
