Where to find hydraulic cylinders for my John Deere 70 loader on my 790.

The hydraulic shop said the rods are not being carried for that size, they are look. And here is the kicker on new cylinders. I tried to order replacements, but they want the numbers off the original.

That's exactly the kind of problem that I am trying to get you to work around. You do not need any numbers on the cylinders. If they say you do, you are dealing with the wrong kind of shop.

What you want is cylinders that match the measurements on your existing cylinders. The part numbers or stock numbers mean nothing. Going down that road is reinforcing the problem, not solving the problem.

Measure your cylinder outer diameter. Wall thickness is standard. Measure the Rod diameter, rod extension length, both end configurations and sizes. Estimate the psi that the loader will encounter. Determine the thread and type of hose connection you want to use. Then look up the cylinder yourself.

Loader cylinders are sort of unique as they are usually metric for starters. But the bore and stroke and mounting pin diameters usually dont match up to any commonly available cylinder.

However you can usually get pretty close to make something work with some minor modification. Like maybe cutting crosstubes down, or even cutting your cylinder mounting tabs off and rewelding to the new cylinder.

But you need to know bore, stroke, and retracted length (or extended length). Rod diameter isnt a huge concern if going with a new cylinder.

Find another hydraulic shop.

When I used to be a heavy equipment tech, the hydraulic shop we used repaired some pretty gnarly rods. They were even able to remove dents from barrels. One time, they built an entire hydraulic cylinder from scratch. That one was a little pricey, but in every case, they were cheaper than complete OEM cylinders.

I asked and the tech said they would try and find some rods for me, so gave the ok.

You telling me, I am seeing all kinds of cylinders with different connectors and confusing configurations. So seeing if the shop can get it done..

I see variations on this question a lot. I'm an older guy and somehow my entire generation is guilty of not passing on very simple mechanical knowledge. We do these things to save money and time, but somehow we just got so busy toing so that we didn't pass on the perspective of how to fix things simply.

Computerizing parts catalogs has not been a boon in a lot of ways either. Almost impossible to get a part without a make, model serial number. Common items like; spark plugs, oil filters, radiator caps are almost impossible at the automotive chain stores. You can see the clerks eyes glaze over when you say I just need a 15 psi radiator cap.
