Big Cars are killing Americans

The article was just Newton’s law applied to vehicles. a bigger vehicle does more damage if you walk in front of it. Surprise surprise surprise. If you walk in front of any moving vehicle it will hurt. Blaming vehicles for people’s stupidity.
It was really a bad article, hosted on a site promoting ****.

Needlessly large vehicles moving one person A to B are wasteful. If a larger vehicle is hauling a load as intended, excellent! On rare occasions, I envy the usefulness of a pick up truck, when I need to carry something too big for my car to carry. All the rest of the time, I appreciate the great mileage my diesel VW gets - getting me from A to B alone. That said, I did carry a Honda riding mower with me from A to B once, entirely inside the car, without damaging anything, and it was not as high to load as a tailgate would have been! And I moved it 100 miles with about two gallons of fuel....

Personal transportation is a small part of fossil fuels being used and wasted. When the VW diesel emissions scandal became public a number of years back, I was in Europe, meeting with two of my clients, German atmospheric research scientists. We laughed over breakfast, as all three of us drove diesel VW's (and I still do). They told me that they had been aware of this "cheating" on VW's (and other lesser publicized auto manufacturers as well). They told me that 11 million VW's were affected by this worldwide. And the total exhaust emissions of those cars was about equal to the emissions from ten of the largest ocean going freighters. So cars and trucks are a part of the problem, and a part we can each take some personal responsibility for. But, buying locally, and not shipping containers around the world will help a lot too!

I put new hardwood floor throughout the house a few years back. Being Canadian, I specifically chose "product of Canada" hardwood. Loyalty to my fellow Canadians and less shipping - to find out to my great disappointment later that the wood was indeed harvested in British Columbia (so product of Canada), then sent to China for milling and finishing, then sent back! That product not only contained mostly non Canadian labour, but crossed the ocean twice for no good reason! I will shop more cautiously next time. Some stuff seems to have to come from Asia, so be it, but not everything does! I choose!

As side note about moderation: I do not moderate here, I'm a guest. I do moderate elsewhere as an unpaid contribution to it being a better "place" for the guests. Sure, some guests figure that what they have to say is important, and should be entitled to be read by everyone else as free speech. Sure, they're free to speak - but, the website is a privately owned place, and the owner is entitled, and indeed required by legal implications, to prevent some kinds of speech, let alone, simply preventing a post from offending other posters. We all have different perspectives on what's okay to post, hey, I've had posts I have made as a moderator, removed by another moderator a couple of times, no one is perfect. But, you'll find that an unmoderated chat site will not attract discussion which most people like. Moderators apply their effort to make it a better place out of a sense of care ('cause there's little or no pay!), so do Moderators a favour and respect their efforts. No moderation is perfect, but on the whole it makes a site you're happy to recommend to others....

i know many here will not agree with this article, but just to stir the pot.... inho increased size of the pickup over the years to the now monstrous has posed safety hazards for pedestrians. add all the small vehicles now on public roads (i hate scooters, etc) only increases risk.
we have a voracious appetite for power/size/creature comfort, which is ok in iteslf. but there are blind spots on these larger trucks, & the increased power & creature comfort sometimes makes us unaware of our surroundings...add our thirst for social media while driving & it makes a recipe for disaster

(this comment is not intended for those who depend on larger pickups for their trade, etc. just for the mall cruisers in crowded areas)
your thoughts? the link should work
This is NOT Facebook.

I drive a Mazda 6 a few days/week. (UAW-built at Ford Flat Rock) I also drive a Chev 2500 HD (my 3rd) a few days/year. 50 yrs ago I'd bought my first new car for college with much help from the 'foss' and practically lived in it for ten yrs. Some of us have fewer places to go, and I've never hit anything but a deer while driving. (2x at ~40 mph in my '88 LeSabre T-type)

I wouldn't want to hit a bicycle driving my barn queen. It has f'glass front & rear vs urethane, L-82 Auto, and is for sale with < 30k mi. Will it start after 15 yrs??

I personally agree with this... but who am I to foist my opinions on others? The only thing I ask is that they know how to drive it, and show the same respect as they expect to their fellow motorists, no matter what they're driving.

Ride the buss, get mugged and the mugger gets out before you make it to the hospital. I will stay in my Ram 1 Ton SRW. Much safer. To add to this My last truck, 99 Dodge Ram 2500 with a buck-stop bumper got wiped out by a semi that lost control because he wasn't paying attention. If I was in any other vehicle I would be dead right now. Between that bumper and the overall size of my truck kept the semi's trail from rolling over the top of me. FYI, Semi went from the west bound lane and crossed the dirt medium and across the east bound lane. That is where he got me. Added the end result for visual reference
The new ride. Gets between 14 and 20 MPG depending on road conditions, traffic and speed. Will hold 4,000 Lbs. and stay level. Room for five adults. Will pull 25,000 Lbs. And for a 3500 ride is very comfortable on long hauls

You're getting better mileage than my company V6 Silverado 1500. (16-18)

You are speaking out of ignorance and believing the junk you read about urban living put out by those with a political agenda. If you saw the "peaceful protests" in many large urban centers in the United States, large trucks are the least thing to be concerned about. Walking and biking to school or the store is a fantasy in most of our majority cities. In many cities, it is dangerous and not because you will get run over by a truck.

I left Canada because of people like you. You want to impact my freedom to address your needs and what you think is "right". STAY IN CANADA WHERE YOU BELONG!

I am a dual citizen and can live in either country. NO WAY I would leave the USA for the socialist utopia of Canada.

Look, if you want to drive a puddle jumper that is your decision. Good for you and for saving the planet and the Darwin candidates who walk off the sidewalk without looking. Most of North America is rural. We need a different type of vehicle than a Smart car, or 544 cc pickup or a battery-operated EV.

Others have no right to decide my choices and proposing taxes or restrictions to "get your way". Most folks that think that way do not see the big picture...only what they want to see and believe.

I don't care if three times more people die by being hit by a pickup truck. What I care about is my level of safety. If I am in an accident, I want to increase my chances of survival. And I feel safer in an F150 than a Japanese mini pickup. If the other person dies, it is sad...if I die, it is a tragedy.

My pastor put it bluntly, "It sucks to be you."
Please, lets not make this about being a Canadian point of view. Obviously it is not, since I am Canadian and called BS on this a few posts ago.

So, that sheds a little light on why you mentioned an article but none was included and a notation in very small type said something about being ‘updated by a moderator’.

A ‘moderator’ felt the need to step in and protect a bunch of adults from something printed at the end of an online article? Is that it?

This is insane the way this forum is ‘moderated’ to the point of actually thinking for You. WOW!
Two_bit.

The article had multiple images of pornography on it. It had nothing to do with the article. Many members reported it, it was investigated, and the link removed as it wasn't appropriate for this forum.

Explain to your 10 year old or wife why you're claiming to be reading a tractor board but looking at multiple motion pictures of nude women and people having sex.

Thanks for your concerns. If you have any further comments on the moderation of this board, send a PM to the owners of TBN.
