In the inner city it's both, many streets are for walking and bicycle only, in other places street parking is converted to bicycle lanes. And people wants this , those that started this is reelected so many people don't feel the need for a car, and car sharing or cheap rentals is used when people needs a car. This is very common in Europe, our old cities are not designed for cars. Is voluntary to live in the centrum of the city's, ridiculous expensive and tiny flats, not my choice of living but are you young or just a couple without children it may work out.

If you have excess off peak power, why not make hydrogen?
I read an article that talked about that in respect to solar farms. Back in the day, if i remember this correctly, a solar farm had enough panels to power 3.5 times the expected load, now with how cheap panels are, they build 5 or more time generation power. So of course they are looking at ways to sell that extra power.

Hydrogen storage is difficult. It's very costly to liquify (-423F), and storage as a gas is very space-inefficient as it's got a very low density, and it will literally gradually seep through any holding container. Finally, transport is difficult for either form, and it also has a public image problem (due to the Hindenburg disaster - which got blamed unfairly on hydrogen).

The above are why most fuel cell development for cars has focused on using hydrogen-rich fuels (typically liquid at STP) as opposed to pure hydrogen.

I was thinking along the lines of a solar farm that generates excess energy during the day, and makes hydrogen to generate electricity at night. I get that it's not the most efficient, but a way to use solar to generate electricity 24 hrs/day.

That assumes batteries to hold the energy until night hydrogen production begins. Big batteries. If hydrogen production takes far more energy than comes out of the process, I don't think this is going to work because the battery storage cost alone would exceed any benefits.

I would like to see how this works out.

No problem, I should be off the road myself by then.
Since I'd be 100 years old by 2050, don't think I'll worry about this either...

Why does one guy get to decide what a country will do forever? Isn’t that called a dictatorship?

Policies can be changed.

Related: looks like “green“ energy isnt up to the task in Europe. Cold winters are going to require coal powered plants to come back on line. Also, green energy is unaffordable (I thought gassing up on sunshine was free?) so some European countries are capping the cost of green energy so it’s citizens can afford to buy it.

Its not a good sign for green energy.

Nukes are the answer, but the environmentalists are too afraid to admit it. They might get banned from Twitter lol

The problem in Europe is political, shutting down atom power plants, Germany have been shutting down several, two in these days, Sweden has also shutted down several, it's pure madness, and Putin's power play whit natural gas doesn't help much....
