I'm thinking right now most people buy things not for function buy to impress. I wear tennis shoes, $35 or less comfortable ones that last not the latest $150+ Nike just because they have the "swoosh" emblem.
Cars & trucks are amazing like that. There was a BBC "Top Gear" episode years ago where they wanted to determine the worst car. They said it's easy to pick on many cheap cars...but they're inexpensive.
Their pick? Lexus! That's right, and they're reasoning was they're expensive and just not that great. When I mention that to Lexus owner friends they're furious.
People should buy what they can afford, what's practical.
Our neighbors bought a new Ford truck...$100,000! Electric tailgate, operate it from your cell phone...I've never seen so many bells and whistles. Do they use it as a truck, take trash to the dump, etc.? No.
