In post war Germany, my dad worked on many wood gas vehicles. Check out Mother Earth News, they had many articles on the method. I still have many of those issues in a tote, might need to dig them out.

Before I retired I did some surveying for an old maintenance yard for a local electric company. I’m not sure what was is the ground but they dug it all up. Kind of a strange project I could never figure out exactly what they were doing but the ground was contaminated from an old coal gasification plant.

Many of the early gas lines in cities and villages were run for coal gas,
they would gasify the coal and push the gas through the system much as natural gas is now days.
