Mayfield caught it bad no doubt but there are a LOT of other communities that were hit equally as hard. A storm that travels over 200 miles on the ground and a mile wide at times affects a lot of people. There has been some small mention of a few others like Dawson Springs, Bowling Green, and Breman, I do wish the coverage of the storm would address the others better.

I will admit in all my years I have never been concerned about a storm but this one I was. We watched the radar from the time it was first on the ground in Arkansas and hit that nursing home. Fortunately we were lucky that it passed 8 miles to the north of us but others near by not so much, one farm lost 30 head of cattle no idea were they are, complete chicken houses vanished. Coverage of the devastated towns and the horrible loss of life is a good thing and everyone should know about it but I think it is also important to cover the folks in rural and less populated areas that tend to be over looked.

One other thing, the number of media should be limited in some way during disaster coverage, yesterday the Kentucky State Police had a conference with the media people to tell them to BACK OFF bothering the people who survived the tornado and getting in the way of those working to find the missing and cleaning up.

It's time for the media to put boots and gloves on if they want interviews.⛑️

Sometimes by the media being there, they act as the grease to get the skids moving for donations/manpower. Yes, some can interfere, but generally, in times like this, it's better to get the word out.

Local county churches have organized groups that are going around cleaning up, serving food and generally making themselves useful. They cleaned up at my sister’s house. Their detached garage was destroyed and two huge trees knocked over. A teenager knocked on the door and asked them where to pile everything. They even climbed in the standing trees to get debris out. I am frankly amazed at the help pouring in from everywhere. But the churches are doing what they do while shunning publicity.
I am a shunning publicity kind of guy but dang if it doesn't make it hard to find the right organization to volunteer with. I don’t want to show up and be in the way.

I just learned a new word for tornado damage: Slabbed.

As in, dozens of houses were completely wiped clear, only the concrete slab remaining.

Sounds like it could have been an EF-5. 227 miles on the ground? Unreal.

we live in southern IN and it missed us. But I do wonder how our concrete house would fair. The main structure is poured concrete, floors/walls and roof with 8 tons of re-bar. The garage/porches and some overhangs are wood construction and would assume they would have been stripped off.

If it does fall, you're going to be a pancake. Hopefully, you'll never have a test.

My father built a bomb shelter under his house. Reinforced concrete walls and ceiling. I often wondered how we'd get out if the house collapsed on the trap door. He said at least we'd be alive and had air and water until someone came looking for us.
