By the time I knew him he drove an immaculate Toyota 4x4 pickup with big offroad tires. He said he had never driven it off pavement so he wouldn't get pebbles caught in the cleats.

Used to see that all the time in the 80s...20somethings with their riced-out tacomas; roll bars, off-road lights, lift kit, huge tires, etc. And not a speck of dirt or scratch in the paint. Posers. Looked ridiculous too.

I used to meet them in the woods during hunting season... they always expected me to pull into the bushes so their ride didn’t get scratched. I started driving woods roads about 15 mph faster and... they moved over.

That's a popular tradition in Michigan to this day but with big Chevies, Fords, and Rams. As with the Jeep crowd night driving requires that all forward lights be on including fog/driving. Air horns aren't as big these days as I'd expect, pro'ly because the pipes are often louder.

Back in the early 50's, my Dad was Superintendent of a lime stone aggregate quarry/crusher. He set of a case of dynamite in the middle of a field (it was gated and locked...belonged to a friend). They set a long fuse, so they had plenty of time to get away. It was a pretty awesome explosion; looked like an A-bomb blast. Too bad they didn't think to take pictures.

I went to a NYE party in a not so nice neighborhood once. I had never seen or heard more gunfire in my life. It was downright scary. Will never forget it and hope to never see that again.

As I'd written, back in the day, I'd pop off a couple rounds (normally .38's since that was what I had)
Nowadays, I rarely even make it to New Year's...
We hear people shooting sometimes, but as we're in a rural area I don't worry about it too much

I used to do a lot of work with local law enforcement. The guys and gals that worked the city said at 11:30 theyw ould find a bridge to pull under and stay there until 12:30. We never go out on NYE. Even if you have a DD too many other drunks on the road. We have people over and they usually stay the night.
