I still think the best education is an apprenticeship.
Nurses were apprenticeships under the Diploma system and qualified over a broad range if patient care.

Now it is a BSN or MSN and many are extremely book smart but starting an IV etc.. often means two years on the floor after degree whereas Diploma nurses could hit the ground running as they already had years experience in direct patient care.

Why isn't academia in advanced education more important than sports?

Knowledge has power for a lifetime. Sports is 10 tops and you're washed out.

It is probably because there are relatively few degree programs where the education is actually useful for what you will be doing later as a job. The people who go for a degree in applied textiles (previously known as basket weaving) know their program is useless and are going to college to party and put off adulthood for 4-6 years. Going to big time sporting events is part of the "college experience." You also get a big demand from alumni who went to school to party and want to temporarily relive those "glory days" by going to games when they are older.

I would modify your statement above, though. Student loan debt has power over you for a lifetime. The fun of college lasts a few years tops and then it's over.

Gotta keep the masses entertained so they will be more inclined to ignore the real problems.
Give them bread and circuses...........

Why did Roman emperors give the poor bread and circuses?

Roman emperors made sure to give the poor “bread and circuses” – food and entertainment to keep them busy and happy. Besides the many festivals throughout the year, rich and poor alike flocked to two spectacles: gladiator games and chariot races. Gladiator games were held in large public arenas like the Colosseum.

Wouldn't it make more sense if education was about learning things rather than being about jobs?

Then it would apply to everything.
I think it would be great if they started doing that again.

Exactly where I was going with that.

that's what they mean when they say......everyone should have a good liberal arts education.

Problem is, many folks don't know the meaning of liberal arts.

The thing now is anyone can obtain that education for as little as a $30 a month internet connection. College in my opinion is becoming obsolete besides the highly technical occupations that require degrees and licensing such as the medical field, civil engineering, architecture, psychology etc.

I’m the second owner of my 1922 home.

First owner graduated UC Berkeley class of 1906 and made a career as a Letter Carrier with Tutoring as a sideline…

He wrote books and had an extensive library as a learned man…

He grew up in St Helena wine country as part of the Swiss Colony…

Always thought it odd but was told he was one of the few that had a steady job all through the Depression…

The homes on both sides were Bank Owned by 1932…

It's not too surprising he was employed through the Great Depression. He was a government employee.
