Economics does not change because of wishes and dreams. There are a limited number of jobs that require degrees. The effort to have more people become better educated is laudable, but has just resulted in people who have degrees but are working jobs that don't need them. This tends to lead to unhappy people who expected a big payday. Even in jobs that actually need a degree, when the supply of potential employees goes up, the price (salary) goes down.

As colleges get bigger, the number of sports teams does not change much. There are hard limits on the number of players on the field. Still only 1 head coach. The supply of fans goes up creating more demand for a limited product. That doesn't even take into account the disproportionate increase in tuition over the last 30-40 years. Effectively we are paying more money for an inferior education because more dollars are chasing a limited resource.

The colleges are responding to the demands of their customers. Students are not demanding a better education, they are demanding more fun. If people changed their demands, the colleges would respond or they would shrink. Until demand changes, the rest is just wishful thinking.

I still think the best education is an apprenticeship.

It was for me, my dad told me that if I wasn't going to get into a field with a high demand that I should learn 3 or 4 different things to do so I would never go hungry, I followed his advice and have never missed a paycheck, just retired after 35 years and could be working somewhere tomorrow if I wanted, glad I listened back then.

just a point....

people learn differently. As an example....

i'm sure we all grew up knowing you can hurt yourself playing with matches.

I assure you my ex was told never to play with matches and.....

she never did...

I was told never to play with matches and ......

immediately went out and bought a few boxes of farmer matches and got burned a bunch of times.

I do remember my buddy had a box of wooden matches in his back pocket and either fell or something but the matches all ignited and he ended up going to emergency with a badly burned ass cheek!

This has always been the case Torvy. Back when my father used to work a job as a vendor for a cookie company in the 60's he told me that there were other vendors that required people to have a college degree to stock their product on grocery store shelves.

Why isn't academia in advanced education more important than sports?

Knowledge has power for a lifetime. Sports is 10 tops and you're washed out.
Why do more people go to a football or basketball game than to a spelling bee?
What draws people to come and their spend money, whether it is for tuition or a ticket for admission?
You can't blame the institution. We as the public make decisions that drive their decisions.

and those decisions the public make tell you what's really important.

Not always, but for some time now, yes. In the early 1900s, only about 2-3% of people went to HS, most of those also went to college. If you were not going to college, HS was not really needed. Over time, more people have gone to HS and HS became less valuable, the education got worse as it was spread across more teachers. Economically speaking, if you have more people in a job, the average ability of those people will be lower. The more we push people into education the more this happens. Education is best when it is self driven. That applies to formal ('book learnin') or apprenticeships.

Gotta keep the masses entertained so they will be more inclined to ignore the real problems.

As far as advanced academia goes, most would be well served to go to a trade school, join the military, or join the work force straight out of high school. If you desire to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc, advanced education is required. Otherwise, for the most part, I don't see the point. I see a lot of my peers still paying off student loans that helped them not one bit in the real world. Essentially, they financed 4 years of partying/putting off adulthood.
